There is NO substantial advantage to be had from the smaller pickup other than size ergo parking etc. Whereas when the smaller one has four occupants, it will feel slower and more cramped.

Fuel economy will be about the same.

Check fueleconomy.gov for the EPA ratings. Also shows interior volume (for cars. I've never looked at it for trucks.)

Also here in New Orleans the roads are rough and traffic is a lot of stop and go. No way are breaks gonna last that long here. I've blown out shocks, tie-rods & Ball Joints on a couple of my vehicles here in New Orleans in a short time. I abuse the hell outta my vehicles and Toyota seem to hold up better than the Ford F-series trucks can take a beating too. I used a F350 for 40,000miles at a Job I had in the past towing a lot of the time; that truck had ZERO defects. My buddy has had an F150 for 6 years with only a brake light switch failuer but he's only put 60K on it.

Call me when your dodge has 300K There's a reason Chrsyler is going under

I've owned Jeep before; they are JUNKs. My Dad has a 99 GMC 1500 4x4 w/ a 4.3 it's need countless repairs and it hasn't even cracked 100K!!! My best friends dad has a 2000 since NEW w/ a 5.3 Chevy 1500 and it is falling apart. My boss has a 02 Yukon XL that has needed a major system replaced every year since NEW (A/C, CPU, Tranny, ABS,) I don't know how many absolute Junk Dodges I've seen around town with nearly every part falling off of them.

My Mother's last Toyota went for 340K before she junked it. Only because the clutch wore out and she didn't feel like dumping money into a rust heap.
I use my F-350 in Oregon, which is not known for it's straight, flat, roads. I regularly tow 12000lbs+, or have a couple of thousand pounds in the bed. Brakes were finally replaced at 85k miles. I have zero complaints with it. It needs new ball joints now, at over 100k, but with what I've put it through, I don't think it's too much to ask. I know people that have over 300k on their 7.3's, and they still love them.

Sure, how many ya want? Here's a few pics of Toyota's shortest NA bed, the PreRunner Double Cab, with some scoots in the back and in tow...

That's an '04 model. Hauling needs saw us trade it for a new F250 in '06, and more recently we've gone to an '09 Tundra. As has been pointed out, once loaded down with even a medium load of stuff, the smaller trucks hold no mileage advantage. In fact, Toyota's 3.4 liter V6 (which is what you'll want at the minimum to haul stuff with) isn't particularly frugal even when unloaded. Great little trucks, though. We loved it and the size is really nice for maneuvering & such.

+1 If yer gonna go that route, at least get a full-sized truck. Check the gas mileage on the leetle ones and the beeg ones and see. I don't have a 4-door, but I DO have an extended cab F250. Diesel. Yeah, I do need it for pulling. (but not as often as I useta)

My 97 didn't, my 03 didn't; neither did my 04, my 05, my 08, my dad's 08, my buddy's 05 or 08, my mom's 01 tahoe; her 03 Tahoe; her 07 Tahoe, or any of the 0-120k mile Escalades that I wrote up for service in my year+ when working at Sewell Cadillac in Grapevine, TX.

I guess it depends on what you want to use it for. The Tacoma is just about perfect for my uses (well maybe it would be perfect with a small turbo diesel). The back seats fold down into a nice platform where I keep tools, clothes, and other field gear that I need for work. Fold the seat up, and she'll do a pretty credible impression of a Camry on road trips. Having owned my share of more "truckish" trucks, I'm glad to have one that is so car-like comfortable and can still haul a load of wet, dirty stuff in the back. After a long day of work, I don't need to drive home in a dump truck. I don't think I'd buy this truck if I was hauling bricks, but as I said, it's about right for my purposes. FWIW, my real world gas mileage is only about 1- 2 mpg better than my full size Chevy got. Though I expected it to be dead even, so I guess I should take the 1-2 mpg as a bonus.

How many 25 year old Toyota and Nissan Trucks are still on the road? Or even 15 year old trucks for that matter.

You want a real truck buy American.

My brother's 99 Sierra 1500 has 185k on the original brakes. It stops reasonably well too, way better than the 88-98 versions.

Well, without reading ALL the bashing threads. I have the opposite going on for vehicles. We have a Chrysler T&C (125k) for people moving, a beater Eagle Talon (2.0l 5 sp. no turbo 170k) and my truck. My definition of a truck seems to be different from others. A truck for me hauls shit or tows shit. Pretty trucks are for the small penis crowd I guess. I have a 98 Chev 1/2 ton ex cab, 2wd, 8 ft. box, 5.0 Vortec with a 5 sp. Mixed driving around 16-18, hwy I can get 22 with 2 bikes in the back. The full box will hold 2 full sized dirt bikes and 3 kid sized bikes with the tail gate up. And all 5 riders fit in the cab. The front seats fold flat and in short order, the cab is ready for sleeping in.

Currently, my truck has 270k on it. The only issues I've had to date is the intake gasket leaking coolant, and the fuel pump started making a racket.

As far as AMC's, I have an 85 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with 170k on it that pushes snow. It's sole purpose in life these days is clearing 2 miles tracks on Lake Winnebago so we can ride our motorcycles.

I used to be a Toyota Tech and I can tell you all with certainty that those trucks have all the same failures as Ford/Dodge/Chevy. There's a piuzza place in town that ran Toy's exclusively, and they would burn through a set of brake pads in about 5k miles. Not just worn, but worn to the metal backing plates.

In Summer 2005, I bought a used 2004 Chevy Colorado, with 3,400 miles on the odometer, for $17,000. It was a 4X4 with the 2.8L, 175 HP, 4-cylinder with 5-speed manual transmission. With 2 guys, 2 bikes, and a weekend’s full of gear it would average an honest 22 MPG going 75 MPH down the expressway.

I put 40,000 miles on the truck in 3 years, and sold it for $14,000, to get a SUV that would accommodate the wife’s pooch. That’s right, zero repair bills and 40,000 miles of transportation in style for $3,000!!!

I would buy another Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon in a second. My Dad has one and he beats the crap out of it; it is all dented up and he rarely changes the oil: 192,000 miles thus far. Other than tires, his only issues have been a HVAC Blower Motor that needed to be replace and a set of brakes. That’s really it.

P.S. Be sure to get one of these:

Here's my rig. As you can see this truck can haul a lot. It has the heaviest GVW of the F150 line. Thats a Harley Dyna and Moto Guzzi in the back. I like the super cab because it is not too long of a truck. There is plenty of room in the back seat.

Sorry those are the only photos I have of it with a bike in the back. Works great for hauling bikes.

I have a 00 Dakota quad cab 4.7L V8 2wd.
had it since new, got 97K on it now, one set of brakes, tires and oil changes is all.
the clear coat is now coming off now, it is 9 years old, red in color and it hasn't been garaged or been polished up regularly so thats life I guess.

Mileage does suck 17 is about it.
if I was to do it again I would go ahead and spring for a half ton four door pickup.

She still runs good and I owe nothing so I will keep it until the wheels fall off or i get tired of looking at it.

Only picture I have is when I picked up my Craiglist deal.
