MY Dad Went to MOAB!!!

The Moab Diner....

I truly love that place.

Dad looks kinda glassy eyed in that pic. I was thinking about effort involved to do this ride - depart South Carolina 400A Sunday morning, arrive in Moab (2000 miles) Monday at 500P, ride the White Rim Trail, ride in the La Sal Mountains, ride Lockhart Basin Trail, an easy day in Monument Valley, depart Mexican Hat at 700A Saturday, arrive home in SC at 1030P Sunday. Dad is going to have to lose some weight and condition himself a little better if he is going to keep doing this kind of stuff. Dad says it is really hard to lose weight on a BBQ diet.

Dad says anybody can take a good picture in MOAB. Just point and shoot at anything. Dad says he tried really hard to take some pics that would illustrate just how big everything is. He is not satisfied that he accomplished this but he has a pic or two that get close to the objective.

I'm re-reading Desert Solitaire right now -- had the book with me out there in Moab to 'set the mood'. I've read all Abbey's books and the few biographies as well -- he was one complex dude.

Dad said they rode the loop counter clockwise, whatever difference that makes.

When people say to ride the White Rim Tail clockwise, I think this is what they're thinking of. It's slightly easier to take this spot downhill than up. Most people make it up, but with some regularity it goes this way.

I think I saw this group on the WRT that day.

I was the one with a white 1150gs and a broken collar bone about half way through.

Dad says they rode the WRT on Tuesday, May 12. He doesn't remember seeing anybody along the way on motorcycles. All he talks about are the girls from BSU. Sorry to hear about your collarbone. What happened?

Bob did not give the throttle enough of a twist and choked down when he hit the ledge shown in the pic. Given that the slope is always steeper than it appears in pics, and the fact that it was a loooooooonnnnnnnng ways down if you went to the rider's left, Bob made a very graceful step off.

I just rode this just over a week ago, clockwise so we hit that part going down. It was a long way down, both down that road and off to the right (for us) if we screwed things up!

Dad says this is where they stopped when we were on La Sal Mountain Pass Rd. Dan rode by the mud hole by going up the bank on the left but the road was completely covered with snow ahead.
