Yes Parallel twin, that one pictured probably has low weight with all the carbon fiber and magnesium on it but the production bike will be GSA weight. The weight distribution Yamaha did on this bike puts all the significant weighty items down low. Similar in design like what Honda does with the goldwing. Dry sump motor increases ground clearance. Cross plane crank design with 270 firing order similar to the R1. It is loaded with electronics for fuel management and tractability.

7 short months one will be at my house. So far that is the only one ordered locally and Yamaha is only building them on a order by order basis so you won't see one sitting on a dealers floor anytime soon.

Can't be a guinea pig since it has been out in europe, south africa and australia since may of this year. Rumor has it Yamaha has been planning the Tenere return since the mid 90's when it suddenly disappeared due to strange decision making within Yamaha. All good reports coming back from those countries so far. I didn't just wake up one morning and "say hey I think I want that new unobtanium over seas yamaha". I followed it on the web and deep down wished they would at least bring it over here. Honestly never thought they would. So really the only thing unique here is if you don't order one between now an march 31, 2011 you won't have one to buy until the following year. Unless a used one becomes available which being limited I am sure some will try and sell high to make a buck.

The real twist here is if the 1200 does well which so far they have 750 orders for in 7 weeks since they became available. Yamaha may bring the XT660 Tenere over here. It is a serious big thumper with nice pieces all over it. It won't be cheap but hey you gotta pay to play. The 660 is a big thumper with a tried and true Dakar background not just a few stickers that say so.

I wished. for right now the 1200 will have to do. It probably will do it well on the long wide open stretchs of highway it looks to gobble up in my future. of course the fun won't stop at the end of the pavement on the 1200.

Hummm, didn't realize Yamaha was the only brand with a tried and true Dakar background. Sure wish BMW made one of those. I'd even leave the sitckers on.
