It takes a WHILE to locate itself and get through the system to a little footprint on the computer screen. Maybe 10 minutes on average...

Yeah, that's about right. Much too slow for me. Glad I wasn't bleeding to death.

I recently tried to cancel my SPOT service actually. Cell service had become so widespread that it seemed redundant. I ended up keeping it because canceling it was such a pain in the ass that it became a bigger pain in the ass to cancel it than to pay the subscription fee, which I'm sure was their plan. Bastards.

I hope to be in an area without cell service in May some time

You mean use the cell service and your phone as a tracking device?

Where are you planning on going?

Yep. "Find my iPhone" works pretty well for the wife.

I don't have any firm plans right now, just ideas for an escape to NC/TN. Nothing has been approved by the War Department as of yet.

They probably still work but the new ones include a free 1-yr membership i think.

Note: I haven't looked into this personally but was told by a fellow ADVer up here in AK.

I've read up on Spots for two years but never bought one. Never seen them with free service except one vender that packaged it where it made you think you got free service, but you were paying $99 extra for the device...

To set it up for 911 service and tracking it's currently $149.00.

For those that have iphones, there's a new app called find friends that allows others with iphones to find you if they are on your friends list so to speak. Requires both of you to have iphones (maybe other ios devices?), but if you do, it's free and works pretty well. Of course, there's no 1 click 911 with locate info on it.....

The Mrs. seems to be happy enough with it....

It works with any iOS device with the caveat that it has an internet connection. Obviously on a bike this would limit you to an iPhone or a cellular enabled iPad. If you don't have service it doesn't work. Oh, it's not really that new, it's been around for well over a year.

Ah. I guess they finally decided to just bundle it the OS recently.

I figured that the cell or internet connection part was obvious

Trying to give some of these inmates the benefit of the doubt

Or if you have a device that will run Google Maps, you can run an app called Google Latitude that will let other latitude users track your phone location, but it is a battery drain. Have to keep my phone plugged in when I've used it.

If any of you saw the helmet cam youtube video of the guy out west that rode over the edge of the mountain, he used a Spot to get help.

Yeah, that's a great point. I think the phone thing sounds great and I believe mine has some gps functionality, but a little redundancy never hurts when one is riding around, especially by oneself. I do not have buyers remorse.

Wasn't that a terrible looking crash? And he was even riding with a buddy.
