Thanks for the recommendations. We're looking into going to higher elevation for cooler temps as we creep closer to the date.

Teaser pics

We left Ponca City, OK at 7:30 am Tues. Headed west through panhandle, hit heavy, heavy rain and had to abort our NE New Mexico entry. Veered south briefly into TX panhandle the west into NM. Headed for NM mountains, wow it was almost cold at 9800'. I didn't even pack a sleeve so all I had was my Stich jacket. Wet gear eventually did dry out.

New Mexico of 64

Came up on a huge herd of elk along the way, pic not that great with phone but all those brown dots are elk. Deer were terrible up in upper elevations we had several jump our path.

We rolled into Farmington, NM around 9 pm and right at 800 miles on the day. Btw Monday we logged 767 miles up through Arkansas into Oklahoma.

Today (weds) we roll onto Zion via AZ. Set camp at the Rally point Ponderosa Ranch resort where we will do day rides out for the next four days. On much lighter bikes with no panniers or camping gear.

Just gotta say this the K60 Scout tires are just great. I left with 2600 miles on mine and the rear is holding up just fine. Tenere will roll over 24k plus on this trip and that thing is getting outstanding fuel mileage. Average 46-54 mpg, I brought my rotopax can but I think 990trailblazer will need it before I will.

Fun trip so far, ride, ride and then ride somemore.

Awesome trip Roy. I still don't see how you get the mileage you do. My display never reads more than a 44mpg average, and that's easy backroads cruising. Running the highway at, ahem, highway speeds , gets closer to 40mpg. Oh well, it's due a TB sync, maybe that will help.

Y'all have fun!

It has always got good mileage. So did Steelpony and dan650's bike when we went to Arkansas. I'm knocking the mileage out of the ballpark on this trip for sure. Very happy with it.

I will be wrenching on a classic gen 1 klr over the next few weeks. Around 10k miles used and abused on a farm for the last few years. It has no lights but does run. Does anyone have any suggestions or wisdom regarding klr's it would be greatly appreciated.

Also wondering whether i need to convert it to chain drive or just leave it as a belt driven??
I'd say sell it and buy a Uly if you want to go the Buell route. If you are determined to do this I'd say keep the belt drive, do the exhaust conversion for better ground clearance, and throw some TKC 80's on it. I'd see how that feels before I start changing out the suspension. It's never really gonna be a woods bike but it could be fun on fire roads and such.

Replace the doohickey (cam chain tensioner). They have been known to fail.

Awesome trip so far. So fortunate to have been invited. More to come

Shooting the bull around the fire last night. Fire must be elevated if that makes sense. Also beer here has no alcohol in it, state law. 12 pak does nothing for the soul. May have to ride down to Arizona to get some real beer.
