Hops

Any ADV people involved in growing hops? I am interested in growing them on a small scale. Any ideas or comments?

I used to grow some when I was homebrewing. You need to buy rhizomes early in the year, probably March or April and get them in the ground early. They work great trellised up the side of a house, they need full sun.

That's about all I know and it's not much.

I have never seen the plants for sale this time of year ready to stick in the ground but you might get lucky and find some.

I've got some growing around here. Full sun, plenty of water, trim'em back in the fall or they'll take over everything and I can't kill'em with the lawn mower. Very tough vines if you let them go. Beautiful buds in the late summer, quite fragrant and the bees love to visit. Don't know the strain, they were here when we bought the place 15 years ago.

Here may be a source

I have visited this museum when at the in-laws place. Fun to drive/ride through the hop fields when they are on and fragrant. They could be a source of info for you. Good luck!

I grow my own and another friend that homebrews also grows his own.
Between the 2 of us we produce much more than we can use in a year.
Hops are very prolific and will take over the area they are given to grow and much more if you don't prune them.
I will have rhyzomes next year, but it is too late to get them this year, unless you are willing to severely damage the donor plant.
There is a lot of info on the 'net if you look around.

I grow four varieties for looks on a pergola and for home brew. I live next door to the hop capital of the world. My hops are in shade part of the day and grow great but I also live in the desert. I bought my hops at Morebeer.com in CA which got them here. Nice huh? Farmers don't like people growing hops because of infections.

Those look great! Beautiful outdoor kitchen.

I know the apple farmers hate hobby growers because they don't spray for apple maggot, thereby ensuring an infection vector for those who do. I guess that is understandable that the hop farmers might not like it either.

What are the hop pathogens that have the hop farmer's panties in a twist? Do you know?

Hop Farmer

I grew up on a Hop farm in the Yakima Valley of Washington. My family had a 200 acre hop ranch in the 1970 and 80's, when the industry got into an oversupply in 1985 we switched to wine grapes. You plant hops in the early spring, using a "slip", it is a root that you cut from another hop plant and plant in the soil about 4 inches deep with the "eyes" or nods facing upward. I noticed the other day that Yellow Rose Nursery in Prosser, WA had some potted hop plants for sale, they had vines about 3-4 feet long. You might also try Hops Direct, Diana sells hops direct to customers and I am sure she could sell you different hop roots next spring. Hope this helps. David

I have grown cascade and centennial hops for the last few years, and now have way more than I can use for my miniscule homebrew operation. They might be hard to have shipped since there are several quarantines in effect (a root fungus issue I believe), but ask around and I'm sure you can find some locally. Maybe ask your local homebrew supplier??? Or swing by my place next April, I'll set you up.

They've been 4.50 per start at my LHBS the last few years. It's also presently illegal to import them to WA. They need to be in-state unless one chooses to smuggle them in.
