2009 690 SMC Owner
My stock 690 SMC runs hot, no question about it. I am looking to switch the thermostat and pipe, but doing the 2nd/3rd gear mod did miracles for my bike. I was very skeptical and didn't expect anything of it. But my bike runs 1-2 bars cooler in traffic compared to before, only had the fan kick on twice going up on the same trails as last weekend when it was almost always on. Big plus also, not stalling at stop lights any more, not even once. Smoothed out the fueling as well. I am judging all this based on the same conditions and riding in two back to back weekend trips of 300-375 miles each. The only difference was that I did the mod. I actually like the bike now

Fooling the computer
Is it the sensor that switches the fan on and off, or doe's the sensor send a resistance message to the computer and the computer turn the fan on and off. I fooled the computer in my Nissan p/u to richen the mixture by putting a resistor in series with the temp sensor. I eventually put a variable resister (potentiometer) in series and it was tunable from the driver's seat. The resistance of the sensor loop can be eaisily changed by putting a resistor either in series or parallel. If you don't know what this means ask a Ham radio operator (KJ4AMH here) This might be a cheap and simple way to get the fan to come on at the temperature you want it to.

The fan temp sensor is located in the right backside of the radiator.
It simply completes the ground to the Electric Radiator Cooling Fan When it's temp is reached. The computer does NOT turn the fan on

fan switch
Has anybody installed a manual switch for the fan, like I did on my old DRZ400. I do not have a big problem with my 690 getting hot, but since I live in Fl, i'm thinking on installing one.
