Western USA trip summer 2014

11 June my wife and I fly out of Sydney to LA for a 9 week adventure in the western states of the USA. We have a week in LA to buy a secondhand FJR1300 (pretty much settled that this bike will suit us best) and some gear. We then set off out of LA on the Angeles Crest Highway to explore the great roads, countryside and National Parks in California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Oregon.

Have done plenty of research on Motorcycle Roads.com, pashnit and a set of Butler maps and planned out about 30 odd days and 12000 klms of riding on some of the best motorcycle roads in the world. Excited? Yes!

Will post some photos and details of our ride as we go.

We live in Auburn, Ca, about 30 miles NE of Sacramento, in the foothills of the Sierras. We have floor space and food if you need.

Have a great trip!!

Have you located a bike? I see many on craigslist.

Also, another travel link...

The west is warming up, ie; getting hot! Keep skin exposure to a minimum, drink sport drinks.

Your ride will be epic! The best to you & your wife.

Enjoy the U.S..

Well, for some reason I have been able to post a different photo after 2 hours of unsuccessful attempts. Hopefully I will have it worked out by the time we hit the road! (The photos in the future will be more interesting than the helmet above!)

My wife (Amanda) and I live in Sydney, we had been thinking about taking some time out this year for a long trip, but weren't sure where to go. One day, without thinking Amanda suggested "how about a motor bike trip around the states?". By the time she had finished the sentence she knew she had made mistake - I am a bike nut, Amanda not so much. Within a week flights and leave were booked and Amanda's mistake was a reality.

A few months later and after many nights of trawling the internet, studying maps and route planning we are preparing to leave. Packing is underway, my last day at work was yesterday and farewells are being said to many friends and family.

The trip has been planned with the aim of riding as many of the best motorcycle roads in the western states of the US that we can. I have planned about 30 days of riding over 7 weeks covering about 12000 klms. The route is not fixed and we will be happy to change as we go, however I thought a decent bit of research up front would help us make the most of the trip. We will also be hitting some of the National Parks such as Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone, Crater Lake to do a bit of hiking.

We are both excited about the trip, although Amanda is concerned about 7 weeks on the back of a bike after the discomfort of a few short trips on the back of my GSXR1000. Hopefully my assurances about the relative luxury of the pillion seat on a FJR1300 are accurate! Another complication is Amanda's tendency to get motion sickness. Apparently a lot of ginger beer will help and hopefully we can find some non drowsy drugs to help out.

We already have a bit of gear, including Amanda's new Schuberth pictured above, but will be hitting up the motorcycle stores in LA for some all weather jacket/pant combos, any recommendations are welcome.

4 more sleeps!

Since you will be in the LA area, suggest you look into Chaparral Motorsports located in San Bernardino. Their store must be 200,000 sq ft of motorcycles and any type of gear you would need..Check them out on the web at WWW.chaparralracing.com. Good prices also. Have a great trip.... Jack
