I bet your gonna get your feelings hurt, when you tally up the bottom line.
. No really, it was worth every penny of it im sure. Especially getting
to take your wife that Loves to ride with you. That was a lifetime trip with
many years of memories to tell your kids / grandkids about
Your a very lucky & blessed man. As stated many times, thanks !!

Thanks Grad

I have been on vacation at the beach for a few days myself and have resisted looking at your thread until I got home because I just couldn't chance spoiling the pictures on the PDA.

It has been a pleasure to follow along.

Kit

Hey Grad,

I know you planned on posting a budget and kit list and while I don't want to sound too impatient, I need a new jacket and wondered what you were using. I have a trip coming up soon and need to pick one up.

Thanks!!

Well, I really should have done this a while ago but I have been busy at times and lazy at times and I kept putting it off. Here is a synopsis of the trip:

7 weeks on the road, 9200 miles
Total spent was just over $5000
$650 for gas
we camped 4 times (far less than we intended)
average hotel room was $69 after tax

We definitely did the trip in a "comfortable" fashion and didn't skimp a whole lot. It could be done for well under $4000 with more camping and less eating out.

Gear?

We both had Olympia Airglide Jackets and Pants with liners, no rain suits at all. The gear did a wonderful job at keeping us warm at high elevation (down into the 30s at times) as well as reasonably cool in the heat (upwards of 100 degrees). Olympia = quality stuff!

Gear that was very nice to have? The Garmin 2730, full of MP3s as well as XM radio was very nice. Made the boring parts go by so much more quickly. The Autocom was also a must for talking to each other. The hard GSA luggage was very convenient, easy to load and unload, and you could easily strap all kinds of stuff on top and still open the lids. Using ROK straps is so much better than any other tie down. I don't know how I ever packed without them.

We had really good camping gear that packed up quite small. We strapped 2 thermarests on the top case, then had a drybag (cheap ones from Walmart) on each sidecase. One side held our sleeping bags (REI down, packed up tiny!) and the other had our tent (Big Agnes Elkhorn 3, also packed up quite small). In hindsight we probably didn't need the camping gear since we didn't camp much, but the nights in Mesa Verde as well as under the Redwoods made it worth it.

Stuff I carried but didn't really need? The Jetboil was quite cool, but we didn't really use it much and it was pretty bulky. I am sure I will use it for shorter camping trips though. That is really the only thing that I should have left at home.

Wow. Just finished reading. Found it from your "just moved to Athens" post. Thanks for a classic good tale.
