Hmmm.... Let's see.. the can't isn't shaped like a loaf or wonder bread... Old style front fender..... Pre-Prolink days... I'd peg this as an '82 model year... Maybe '83.

Actually that was my brother's father in law who accidentally jumped it between two trees, I think he hit the 3rd in the middle.

My turn to pipe in with the Steeds I've owned...

At 10 years old (April 1987) I saved up all my allowance, and bought myself a dirtbike. It was a 1980 Honda XL 80. Owned the bike until I was 18.

Yes it's a corny photo, but it's the only one I have aside from one with my sister posing on the bike. And well I'd rather post a pic of a young Pickle and Grandpa pickle than a pic of Punky Brewster on a bike.. Man 80s fashions were crap!

In between the XL80 (named Chernobyl) and the bike below was an XR75, another XR75 and an XL350. None of which I have pictures of. The XL350 never ran, but the XR75s did and I rode those instead of the XL 80 some days.

In 1994 I bough myself a 1991 CR250R.

The bike is #23 and the pilot is yours truly. This pic was taken Spring 1995. Although I'm mid pack in this photo. That bike was a holeshot winner in several races I entered. It made me poor due to maintenance costs, and put me in the hospital twice; but it was a blast to ride. After investing over a grand in replacing the entire electrical system, I was accepted into college, so I sold it for a song. I still have a soft spot in my heart for that bike, and would be tempted if I saw her again.

In 2000 I decided to sling a leg over a bike again. this time a well tuned 1995 KX250. Pro Circuit exhaust, and a Wiseco Pro Lite piston. This bike hauled derrière. Several of my friends tried riding this bike, but only one could ride it as well or better than I. This bike wasn't for unexperienced dirt bikers in other words.

The KX250 was fun.. but I wanted fun on the street. the day "The Fast and the Furious" (Original) opened in the theaters I picked up this baby for $1100, with just over 10,000KM on the clock. 1985 GPz550. A total riot to ride.

I loved the GPz550, and didn't want to part with her, but a 3/4 ton pick up with a driver chatting on a cellphone made the decision for me, and the bike was MPI salvage.

In hind sight I should've bought the bike back, and found a new frame.. Instead I made a big mistake...

I bought an MPI write off to fix.. 1986 Yamaha FZ600

Although the damage looks only superficial. Turned out the Neck was tweaked and there was no way to repair the frame. I fought with MPI to have this bike listed Parts only instead of Salvageable, but ultimately lost that battle. The bike taught me lots about buying wrecks. I parted it out on eBay for a nice profit. (but it had under 5K on the clock)

I decided that one dirtbike wasn't enough.. A motocross bike couldn't be ridden down the highway, and just run through a ditch into the offroad... I bought this...

1986 Honda XL250

If I remember correctly... I spend $1600 on it... I loved this bike, as I've always been a Honda fan (but I find the Kawi's for a good price..) After several Highway trips, I came to a conclusion.. this bike was bad on the street, worse in the dirt, and none of my buddies wanted to ride with me anymore... So I traded it straight up...

Turns out a guy down the road (neighbor to a motorcross buddy) had an 87 Hurricane 600.

It needed a little work, but otherwise ran well. I took the risk, and did a straight up swap.

Kept this bike 2 seasons I think... I missed the GPz. I wanted a GPz... I found another GPz... I turned this bike for a cool $1000 profit, and said goodbye to this fun machine. Big mistake.

The next few bikes I'd rather forget...

For $500 or so I got this awesome 1984 GPz550 P.O.S with close to 60K on the odometer. (What the F was I thinking???)

this bike took me on a failed SS1600 in 2006. It blew as much smoke as the Snow birds with their demonstration smoke. The bike was promptly sold for $550. (with a parts bike) As much as I liked the GPz line. I've decided to say goodbye to them. they're aging and a good one was hard to find..

I didn't go far. a 1980 KZ750 (Pinky) turned up in Brandon. Drove out there and picked it up for 400 coins. As I pull out of her driveway, the cowgirl broad that sold me the bike says.. Oh I named her "Bitch" as she can be one.

At the same time, I bought another fixer-up'r. a 1984 GS550.

I ripped the seat off the GS and strapped it to the KZ. Took the KZ seat to be re-covered, and de-pinked the bike (Even the bolt heads were pink). When I was done the bike looked much more like a guys bike.

the bike was fun to ride, but it must've been designed by triumph or MG, because if it rained, it stalled and wouldn't run. the bike would stall for no reason, or not start. This bike had a temper.

I wanted to fix up the GS550, so I bought another GS. A 750. (No Pic) It dawned on me... Why do this? I no longer have a truck, so safetying the bikes will be a pain. I can't take the motocrosser to the track without a truck.

So the deal with my wife was made.

Sell the KZ750.....
Sell the KX250.....
Sell the GS550.....
Sell the GS750.....

Buy one bike that can do hwy and off road.... A BMW F650GS... the US dollar was at par, and there was one in Minneapolis... That's the one. Got the Spousal approval, provided I only use "Bike sale revenue" it's okay.. Call the dealer, bike was sold.. Then in Winkler I found an 2003 KLR.

Well.. It may not have 88HP like the Hurricane, It may not be as comfy as the GPZ550 or have the rumble of the KZ750... And It's not the BMW of my dreams, but I've gone through the 10 steps of KLR acceptance.. and I maintain that this IS the funnest bike I've had. Not because it's the best riding bike, or most powerful... but because it takes me everywhere my heart desires, and does it without a single complaint.

GP....Great little history lesson of your twisted mind with regards to pink motorcycles...that was hilarious! We all have memories that stay with us forever when it comes to girlfriends and motorcycles...gotta love it!

Hey Skysailor.... Won't this be the third time you have to put your bike away for the season ?

I should have my bike back from Wildwood on Thursday....so Friday and Saturday look good for day runs.... do not see much activity, all the bears may have gone into hibernation here in Winnipeg..... Bent Forks pmed me from Texas.... says there riding stuff did not look at good, also mentioned it was a balmy 75"F" ( that "F" is for fu$k)

HI there

When I told Greg the riding didn't look good I was in the lower Rio Grand area which is very flat and not many bikes around. Well I am in the Big Bend National Park area now and the riding is very good Still not many bikes but lots of interesting roads and mountians. Temp is good at around 80 F. So I am going for a ride now and no pictures my camera broke the second day out on the trail. will try to get it fixed.

I think they're making me work on Friday. A total waste I tells ya! Saturday, I'm heading somewhere. Maybe West Hawk for a late lunch? Then, maybe I'll put the bike to bed....again? I'm burning all my stabilized gas. HEHEHE

Riding in November?

I have now officially got Mondays off in my new job...so sun/monday rides are all I am good for. I did hear that Friday was supposed to be a nice day. I can only hope it drags on to Sunday/monday! Enjoy the ride!

OLR spotted on Dakota Ave

Spotted a KLR yesterday... Dark green with after market large tank. Bright lime green saddle tank bags and rider was wearing line green helmet.
Very colour full...... was that you Humvee?
