DR Cool Ride

Looks like I won't be able to make it on the 25th at this point. Sorry for the short notice.

Just like this one only black. Advertised as having 6.5 horsepower and the perfect compromise between the 50 and 150 cc bikes and all for a paltry $350

The bike in the add looks like the cruiser model. Honda claimed it was a touring bike. I think it was also called a " Benley" in a few of the old adds. My memory of those old bikes is not as good as it used to be.

Ha ha yes it was a cruiser and a touring bike. We toured 2 up from Dryden to Kenora return once. That was an epic journey, took all day and I can remember both of us leaning down as we went down hill (with a wind) and seeing the speedometer go up to 65 mph with the little engine screaming.

The first bike I owned was a 1965 or 66 Suzuki K11 80cc two stroke Sports. I have never seen one since I toasted the engine on a head down full throttle run from Winnipeg to Bagot Manitoba. At least I made it there. I seem to recall getting about 65 miles per hour out of it.

Would love to find one like it again but they are pretty rare around here.

My goal is to make sure the memories of my current bikes end up as great as the memories of my past rides.

The rumour IS true...

Bugger me... I managed to scrape a peg feeler this evening

Ok it was a moderate speed left turn over uneven pavement and the rear suspension took a bit of a hit, which resulted in the brief moment of touchdown, but still... I figured the KLR would only scrape a peg in the final moments of an "...and so I dumped my bike.." story

(add my condolences too, Brian)

Anyone out and about today? I put on 150km on dirt & gravel farm roads out west of Winnipeg - Springstein, Beaudry Park, Sanford, etc etc etc. Getting used to the KLR but my butt is suffering.

I needed a day around the home today (last day of vacation), so no riding.

I was on the dirt south of Sanford a few months back, intending to go to Rosenort. It seemed like the ruts were 2 feet deep in places. I turned on to the freshly graveled high dike road, intending instead to reach Domain, where a nice bloke in a dump truck passed me at about a hundred mile and hour and blinded me in a cloud of lime dust for a butt-clenching eternity.

Kinda put me off back roads...

The KLR seat is the Prison Buddy of motorcycle seats....no, I don't think I will develop that analogy further.

KLR Seat

I don`t think the seat is that bad. Just finished 1100 kms in the last couple of days and no problems for me as far as the seat

Hi Charlie - where'd you go? Re seat comfort, I've sure put a lot of kms on my rig, and found the seat surprisingly comfortable for such a narrow seat.

I'm ending up with a tender tailbone from the seat. But even on the Goldwing I use two gel pads and sheepskin for any length of trip.

The farm roads are in excellent shape right now. Even the dirt roads in the area are flat and solid.

Weekend Riding

Friday I went the Elie, Wpg. Letellier, Rosetown and all points in between route. Saturday I crossed the border at South Junction, Roseau, Thief River Falls, Grand Forks. Lakota, Langdon and then home. Just over 1100 kms. It finished off the rear so I put on a new tire today and went for a small run. I really had no destination in mind. Just put the bike in gear and go. I`m not much of a planner. I`m looking forward to next Saturday. It depends on the weather but I may start out a little earlier get to Wpg in a round about route. See you Saturday

Finally got some WiFi time. Been remote camping in Red Lodge Montana and riding in Yellowstone.
Did a number of mountain passes and saw some spectacular scenery.
Rode the famous Beartooth pass at dusk, not so much fun as it was 7c and wild life lurked around many 20 mph switch backs.
Hope to post some photos in the next few weeks.

As for the Dr. Cool ride, it's a go, hope the weather is good.
Doug from Trail Dreams has offered a prize and a 15% discount at his shop on Dakota, do the rude will end there. The riders and passengers can shop for few minutes while Mrs Backroader and I get the Bar B Q warmed up.

See ya at Tims on Saturday ( Sage Creek)

Calling all riders - labor day weekend ride

So I have an idea...not an original idea though.
...and it's not like I have been laboring much...

However, I have earned myself a kitchen pass for labor day weekend and have an idea for a ride. Seems my father-in-law's parents met at Windigo lake, which reminded me of this ride report:
2008:
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=394825

And after a bit more research, there seems to be nothing interesting to see up there

2010 RR:
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showp...postcount=3123

abandoned airstrips?
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showp...6&postcount=38

about 2000km return from Winnipeg incl 500km gravel. Camping (preferred, provided I can run faster than you ) or motel. Looks like carrying extra fuel is highly recommended (500km stretch from Pickle to Windigo return with no fuel)

Any takers?
