Sounds like that would be a great ride, unfortunately I'm already booked up for that weekend.

+1 for the Corbin seats.

Windigo and back is a great trip. The gravel is well groomed. There is a camp site at Manakos Lake about 1/2 way up the gravel section. A stop at the abandoned residential school is a must. Cooler nights should keep the bugs away.

Gas is available at Pickle Lake but that is it. I made it up to Windigo and back on one tank (KLR) traveling an average 80k. Hit reserve about 25k from Pickle.

Lots of camp sites on the road back to Sioux Lookout.

If you need any other info let me know

However, I have earned myself a kitchen pass for labor day weekend and have an idea for a ride. Seems my father-in-law's parents met at Windigo lake, which reminded me of this ride report:
2008:

And after a bit more research, there seems to be nothing interesting to see up there

abandoned airstrips?

about 2000km return from Winnipeg incl 500km gravel. Camping (preferred, provided I can run faster than you ) or motel. Looks like carrying extra fuel is highly recommended (500km stretch from Pickle to Windigo return with no fuel)

Any takers?

KLR Seat

There are lots of things you can do to a klr (or any) seat to help.
Temporary fixes include flattening out a rolled up newspaper etc. to put under your butt.
Longer term might involve a tool roll and a couple of Gatorade bottles.
Long term will involve about $40 in material and a staple gun.
All make the seat wider, which is more important than plushness for long hauls.

Speaking of which, though technically not a long haul; left Winnipeg yesterday, overnighted in Strathmore and arrived in West Kelowna at 1PM today.
2000 Km and my butt is fine.
Ok, I cheated and took the RT. ;-)

Sorry I'm going to miss the Dr Cool ride, but Whyswoman will be showing up with something Dr Cool left at the NOFAR.
(Thanks Isplat2!) A decision as to how best put it to use must be made the day of the ride.
Cheers, Brian

Saw a story where a guy used a piece of driftwood plank that he found on a beach. Stuffed it behind his pannier and drew it out and sat on it when it was needed. Sometimes it is just a temporary change you need.

I have a gel seat pad (actually, two pads in one cover so about 2" thick) and a sheepskin. They're off my Goldwing though so pretty big for the KLR. Haven't experimented with them yet.

Its a little old thanks. I could be swayed with a cash difference, I guess it all depends on what your DR is all about. I have found myself really enjoying the backcountry and looking for a bike more suited. Maybe even getting into the 30+ hare sramble scene if I find the right bike. Eg KTM 450-exc
