However, I have earned myself a kitchen pass for labor day weekend and have an idea for a ride. Seems my father-in-law's parents met at Windigo lake, which reminded me of this ride report:

And after a bit more research, there seems to be nothing interesting to see up there

abandoned airstrips?
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showp...6&postcount=38

about 2000km return from Winnipeg incl 500km gravel. Camping (preferred, provided I can run faster than you ) or motel. Looks like carrying extra fuel is highly recommended (500km stretch from Pickle to Windigo return with no fuel)

Any takers?
I have been wanting to do this ride for a long time, and had all intentions to do it this riding season, but now it does'nt look like I will get up there this year. It would be cool to go up there .......maybe next year. Are you going to do it?

Back from my little trip - 8 days to Keweenah Peninsula on the Goldwing, 2 - up.

Here's quite possibly the least interesting trip photo ever posted:

I did pick up a nice pair of Sidi boots and a bunch of KLR parts (ready for next tech day!) while I was there.

Stupid question?

...but here goes - anyone have a new 14 tooth front countersprocket for my KLR? ...or want to trade for a new 15? Are they easily available locally... like from the Kawi dealer?

I would also post on the KLR forum if you have not already. Other wise give our friends at Dual Sport Plus a call. You may want to check with the other Winnipegers as a group order to save on shipping.

The kitchen at the Winston Hotel in Pickle Lake burned down earlier this year, but I believe they have a temporary restaurant set up.

You'll be passing about 40 km from my location on your way by. Watch out for the steady stream of transport trucks until after the Windigo turnoff. (This place burns a LOT of diesel!!)

I fly back to TBAy Tuesday afternoon, for a glorious 3 weeks off...

The Versys will probably require extra fuel to make the return trip to Windigo. Last gas is at the station just before you get to the end of Pickle Lake.

You might be able to sweet talk some gas from whoever's in residence at Wiebenbille? It's a gravel runway to your left northbound before the turn off to Opap. I wouldn't count on it though. At least the bugs have turned it down a notch. Enjoy the journey. Be sure to let somebody know where you're headed, and when you plan to return. I'd suggest dropping in the the OPP in Pickle. Both ways, so they know you're back out. There is NO cell coverage in Pickle Lake.
There is a great B&B run by the folks at North Star Air. If you overnight, this is where you want to do it. Call them in advance though, it's the only place in town where you get clean sheets! Pickle is a shit hole.
I know the Winston still serves breakfast and lunch out of a trailer behind the hotel. Food's pretty good. Don't know about dinner though? Probably.

Windigo riders

Lived in Pickle for 15 years...Sioux Lookout for 2. Miss that area, and am heading there the weekend after you folks are.
Have a great ride! Bring a flashlight to do some true exploring at Stirling Lake, them basements are purty creepy "and dark" without...especially at night!

Have a great ride, Patricia Auto in Pickle (they sell boats, not grocery like the other gas stations) may be your only bet for premium gas, if they still sell it. Or swing by the airport for some good ol 100 ll

Have a great ride, if you haven't been before lots of options after Vermillion Bay, and Dryden to take backroads to Sioux, or head around Lac Seul on your way home for an extra leg. Versys will do fine on those roads, probably firmer gravel than what you'll see on the way to Windigo.

Enjoy!!
