Ian, there is not much that gets past your place without you seeing it.

Warm'n up!

Hey inmates.
Landed in Sioux City about 1720, temp was 18.6 C. Big change from -6 as I went through Morris.
I was even eating a few bugs this afternoon.
Hope to get west of Texas tomorrow.
Thanks for all the cheers!
Cheers!

Weather

Hey Brian let us know what the SUN looks like. It seems like forever since it was last seen in Southern Manitoba. Have a Safe Good ride.

Brian, are you gone for the season? Leaving your bike and flying home? Waiting for a break in the weather to return?

PiffleMaster, you picked the right day to head south.

This afternoon I was driving a car in St. James, on one of the streets running between Portage and Ness Avenues, and spotted a guy riding a hacked motorcycle of indeterminable origin and vintage...I slowed down and gave him the ADV salute, but he didn't seem to catch my drift...guess he wasn't one of ours...

Ural sidecar rig?

Lee, wasn't one of these, eh: http://www.imz-ural.com/ These Russkie Ural rigs are available in 2WD (selectable), and there are at least 3 in Winnipeg that I know of. They are the real deal adv winter wagons! The Russian Dnepr rigs are similar (but not exactly identical), and there could be a few around too. I put my bike away. I was tempted to mount the knobbies, and go play in the snow... but thought better of it.

I am going to jump in here and let you know that Brian is en route to Victoria BC to see his #1 Son Travis - but because he got busy with computer work, and then got sick, he was unable to leave in October as he had originally planned...

He will continue to head west, south-west, or whatever is needed to get to the Pacific Coast Highway, and then will start heading north back to Canada...When the visit is over, he will likely take a similar route - except in reverse...Hopefully he will be back in about 3-4 weeks...

I am looking forward to hearing from him in the next couple of hours, to hear about the adventure du jour....

It could well have been, but I am not an expert on these things...The guy was wearing a hi-vis and black jacket though...

Hey, the last "NEW" bike I bought was a new 650 Seca XJ650R (the red one) in '83. From Wildwood Sports. Great bike for the time.

Yeah, mine was the nice transparent red too. They were great bikes. Took mine down to the Black Hills right after buying it from Moose Jaw Yamaha, and when I got posted to Germany crated it up and brought it with. I put a lot of kilometres on it exploring the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) with it. When I met my wife there, dragged her pillion all over the place on it too. Good memories. Saw a minty one for sale in Ontario recently... was tempted for old times sake.

Edit - this recalling of past steeds drove me to look at old photo albums and remininsce a bit about my time in Germany... here's a pic I scanned of the Cdn spec Seca in Germany. Insurance was not cheap! Hannigan windshield and mirrors on a BMW fairing (if I remember correctly) and aftermarket Marzochi shocks:

Not gone for the season.
It's too early to tell what's going to happen when I'm ready to come back.

Woke up to 14.5 C, hit the road minutes before the sun, and by 8 AM it 18C.
This afternoon hit a high of 29.5. Yes, I have a sunburn.

But it wan't all roses... I have never experienced winds so strong, such that when I would park the RT, I had to point it into wind so it wouldn't get blown over.
Semis were moving at a crawl, and though the tractors stayed between the lines, the trailers would run with a set of wheels in the downwind lane.

Dorothy and Toto had good reason leave Kansas!
I've seen plenty of tumbleweed... it's brown. Today I saw green tumbleweed.
The wind was so strong it was ripping the live ones from the ground.

Oh yeah, lots of folks in cars were dodging them (tumbleweeds) and it took me a minute to recognize that you don't want one jammed in beside your catalytic converter! (or puncturing a rad or oil cooler!)

Anyway, overall a good day, and I'm within spitting distance (sort of) to New Mexico.
Tomorrow should see me in Arizona before the sun sets.

Stay warm!
Cheers!

BIG EDIT!
Just watched the area news, and winds were between 60 and 65 MPH.

That 'splains a lot! (Turns out I didn't have a hole in my gas tank after all!)

I will tell Deborah to turn down the big fans at St Leon, who knows it might help!
