You should book your road test way early (you're still learners stage, right?). Slots fill up quick. I know Winnipeg was backlogged 2 months when I booked mine, though Selkirk and Portage had shorter wait times. I do not know exactly how many weeks out you can book, but any autopac agent can tell you.

Winter Ride!

Minus 5C today and gorgeous outside - let's ride! . Had to go for a test drive out to Beaudry Park. The roads are sure greasy - without a sidecar I think a guy would wipe out very quickly. Darned good for the head going out for a ride in the country on motorcycle in January... bit like snowmobiling on 3 wheels!

Kind of wondering why you would go through the states? Hwy 17 from the Manitoba border to Ottawa is about as good as a ride can get. Cannot think of a route that can compare going state side.

What route are you thinking of? Northern MN, WI, MI or south IL, IN, OH, PA, NY, VT, NH, ME
Hwy 2 is not that great and if you go south stay away from Hwy 30 in IL, IN and OH.
I hope you guys are thinking of only backroads, more interesting. Hwy 17 is not a bad option, but those damn truckdrivers . Good luck planing a nice ride.

I am with Dryden Rider on this one. Hwy 17 is a far nicer ride with much better views along the way. There are a few nice spots on the south side of the border but the North side is almost all worth seeing.

A) it's faster and B) we want to go through Chicago and other cities we've never been to

Chicago can be pretty hair raising on a bike, unless you actually know where you're going. Be safe.

I agree with Skysailor, you may want to plan your arrival time at mid day to avoid the traffic.
Downtown Chicago has quite the night scene, lots of up scale eating places and lots to see.

There are some other advantages such as cheaper fuel and accommodations but the actual ride on a KLR will not be that exciting. Most of the highway through that route will be multi lane and high speed, unless you plan some secondary highway travel which will take away the first advantage of faster.

Do consider hwy 17 from Ottawa - Kenora on your return.

Mid day or mid night, it'll be busy.

Downtown or outskirts, it'll be interesting.
Had a full clip go off outside my bedroom window in 2011. (I think I counted 17 rounds.)
