That's a pretty well-written article. I may have to look into picking up a subscription...

The key things for KLR longevity :
1) keep the valves in spec.
2) don't overheat the engine
3) don't run it out of oil
4) make sure the Doo is doing what it's supposed to do.

Makes sense Hekto!!

You made a wise choice in staying down there...4" of snow this morning and a full on raging blizzard is happening

Spent the last couple of days collecting dog shit as it rises out of the retreating snow. Like little brown submarines! The hunt for Brown October continues today. Both bikes cleaned up, warmed up and ready! Light snow overnight. Must stop soon? No?

Hektoglider Two really dumb questions. What camera are you using? What are you riding? I'm GREEN!

I am doing the whole shebang with an iPod . Using the maps, posting photos to ADV, searching the web, using the calc for money exchange, and a whole lot more. We also have a small laptop & a Fuji X10 camera which has taken the fine photos but they are saved to a Kingston stick 8G for much later. I have not seen our best stuff except on the 7" screen. We got some great photos and also logged a lot of GPS stuff too. Basically the small laptop is needed to manage the photos & GPS data but is not set to wifi, just the iPod for web.
We are riding almost identical 250cc Super Sherpa bikes and they are all you need for the roads we choose to go on.
You may be green but you can do a winter getaway easily. It's cheaper being here then it is to ride in Canada and a great experience. The hardest part was leaving home.
There's wifi free everywhere. We have Skype on the iPod and email etc. Fully connected 80% of the time.
The small bikes get great fuel economy, minimal wear on chain(adj once since Texas) and tires are on the shelf for $45 in the corner store in the small village

Releasing ourselves from the life situation and obligations to become free is they key that opened the door.

We average hotels at $20-$25 a night with varying amenities but most have wifi or there is wifi close by.

Big modern stores everywhere allow us to stock up & eat cheaper. We have a stove with us.
OK I answered your Q & a bit more!

I hope you guys that are retired or semi retired that are standing around looking out the window can see that you can watch the snow melt from down south

Do the Dew or Doo

I've been involved in checking 14 "Doo's" in the past four years..
Three 2008+ "Doos" had zero tension springs, while two 2008+ had broken "Doo" springs. Of the older pre 2008 models, one had a broken spring and one had a broken "Doo". Let's see.. That's 7 out of 14... Failed.
While the new "Doo" may not fail, the spring failure or loss of tension may eventually be just as damaging.
If the tensioner doesn't do what it's supposed to do when it's supposed to do it, you'll probably end up spending a crapload of money when the "Spring" (or broken Doo) gets mangled in the other running bits of the engine.

Ask Backroader how much his "Doo" cost him when it failed....
Ignore, scoff or dismiss at your peril.

Oh, and don't bother to check the oil level while you're at it.

Cheers, B

PS. This isn't a shot at Dryden_Rider_54, this is backup for what he's saying.
Your logic is sound as usual Brian...I trust you are on the mend! Good to see Lee's pictures of an actual motorcyle out in the actual outdoors of Manitoba!

Greg, do you recall when I did the doo on my KLR in your garage, I believe Jim Toe had brought me the heavier spring...but I don't really remember if we changed it out...do you?
