Today

Pretty darn nice day today. Way better tomorrow cause I`m going for a sled ride. Mark looks like he is in real deep thought about something. So are you allowed as a passenger to have a cocktail? Or is it just better to have one and ask for forgiveness later. Isn`t the Ural the Russian version of the BMW or no?

It was gorgeous out there today! Looks like some of the ice on the road is finally starting to break down!

We're over the hump, riding season (well, the "regular" riding season, anyway) is on its way...

I've only lived in Winnipeg for 10 years and I would never make such a statement. My spirit was broken 9 years ago and these days I only begin to "hope" to ride in May.

No no no don't say that, gotta keep those positive vibes going.

Here's hoping we've got clear, salt-free roads in March!

I'm originally from Toronto and therefore quite delicate. My first reaction to everything is to call in the army.

That's a plan. Get them to clear the roads and use flamethrowers to clear the ice. Ride year round. If we all just say we are from out east the government might cave and do it.

All kidding aside. In the past all it has taken me to get out and ride is a dry road and warm clothes. In 2009 I rode to Calgary in mid March and played in Foot hills and Banff area. I did get caught in a snow storm before leaving Calgary and had to wait three days extra to get out. Was pretty ass puckering in places till Medicine Hat and after that smooth sailing all the way back.

So bring in the army and let's get riding.

I know a guy just back from a tour, and one thing is for sure: theyre not scared of hard work. A case of beer later and that hole in my dad's yard was taken care of.

The Making of a Dual Sport motorcycle

Some info for those that wish to bring their favourite dirt bike up to "Street Spec".

My goal: to make my 1988 XR600R my ultimate DualSport bike.

I just spoke (phone conversation) to an Inspection Standards guy at MPI about this endeavour and he said the following:
A bike, at the time of manufacture, if deemed 'Off-Road' (determined by the VIN) CANNOT be modified in any way in order to move it to another category (i.e. Dual Purpose, Touring, etc.).
This contradicted a conversation I had (via email) with another MPI representative (unnamed) stated that:
An 'Off-Road' motorcycle CAN be modified, provided the modifications satisfy The Highway Traffic Act, in order to change it's class to that of 'Dual Sport'.
So, I asked then I asked: "If I home build a frame, have it inspected, throw the existing engine, forks, wheels, exhaust, etc., into the frame, can I then insure it for the road?" He said: "Yes". He also stated that I could call the frame whatever I liked (Dual Purpose, Touring, Enduro, etc.) and insure it accordingly.

After this I determined I have 3 options:
1) Build a frame (categorize it such that it carries the least amount of insurance $) and get it inspected then insured. Longest time frame.

2) Find an existing "street-legal" frame, modify it to accommodate my engine, wheels, tank, etc. Keep VIN and get it safetied and insured. Moderate time frame.

or

3) Take existing frame, strip it (including VIN), clean it up completely, modify it with gussets, cross-members, etc., repaint, categorize it accordingly, get it inspected then insured. Shortest time frame.
Since the current frame is essentially useless to me as it stands, I think I will attempt option #3 and see how it goes. My current ride is an R1150GSA, and as much as I love her, she is a pig on the trails and back roads and I want something more adaptable in a variety of environments. I would like to ride to the tip of Argentina one day.

I would appreciate the thoughts and opinions of the other Inmates.

Cheers!
