the mirrors are some cheap EMGOs I got from Dennis Kirk. I think they were $15 for the set. They keep flopping back on me but I think some loctite on that screw oughta take care of that.

I like Jackyl but I can't say I'm a superfan. Never seen 'em in concert anyways. I'd sure like to see that chainsaw solo though.

you made this ride down and back seem so easy. I still cant understand how you got away without all that paperwork !! congrats
It didn't seem easy. I made a big mistake by going all the way to Panama. I guess it made it a better adventure, but it certainly wasn't a vacation. Yeah I can't believe I got away with that stunt. It probably saved me 80 bucks too. $30 of fees plus insurance at about $5 a day.

On to the last leg of the report:

I can't afford hotels in the US so I sleep in the woods. Here's the bike while trying to ride off the highway to find a place to sleep.

the weather was nice. I slung up a hammock and slept under the stars.

I got up the next day exhausted even after a good nights sleep. I fell asleep at a McDonald's for almost a halfan hour.

I was riding and heard this loud THWAK on my helmet. This looks like it hurt.

I really needed a shower so I slept at a campground in Louisiana that night. I think it's the nastiest place I slept at on the whole trip.

The next day I rode for about 11 hours. It rained for 6 of 'em and the Frog Toggs leaked clean through. I was dripping wet under the suit. I got home around 9 on the edge of hypothermia. My feet and hands had turned white and when I warmed up I could feel pins and needles kinda like when the blood flows back when your leg falls asleep. It sounds funny to say I almost got hypothermia in Alabama in July but there it is. I was shaking so bad I could hardly untie the knots on my boxes.

I've been having chills for the last few days. Last night I cranked the AC all the way up and still soaked my sheets from sweating. I'm hoping it's just from that cold run through 'bama and not malaria. I'm going to get a blood test at the clinic on campus just to be sure. I can't let malaria kill me--I plan on going out in a motorcycle crash

Here's some pics of the damage on the mounts.

man was I close to losing that left box. the right doesn't look much better.

man it hurts just to look at that.

the box leaned in so far it started hitting my final drive. It took a few of those fins out. wish I had seen that on the trip. that big oil spot makes me kinda nervous.

I lost a fairing mount too.

the final ODO shot

that 83.6 mph is the fastest recorded speed I've ever gotten the G/S up to. I think I hit that on a 90 degree corner somewhere in south Mexico

for the trip:
2 months on the road
9,000 miles
$3400

at least that part of my planning worked out. All of those are right around where my estimates were at the start of the trip.

I'll get the bike fixed up and, if the money works out, I'll take a run up to Prudoe Bay next summer. I think that AK trip will be a cake walk after this

Great report Brad, I'm glad you got home in somewhat the same condition you left in. Now you can start fixing the bike again

thanks for all support. It really was motivating to hear that folks enjoyed reading the report while I was riding.

I've spent the last few days either shivering when it's warm, sweating when it's cold or in general feeling miserable. I had a really bad day in south Mexico too. I'm going to the doctor monday to see if I picked up malaria somewhere. The symptoms seem to be right. I got my oil this morning and I've been laying in bed ever since too tired to change it. I also need to get some brake pads from somewhere and adjust those valves. Just thinking about it makes me all achey. I'm going back to bed.

Dude. Don't mess around. Get to a doctor! :mulekick

And uh... you can't come to my house until you're feeling better. My wife would shoot you and me if one of the kids got malaria.

Other than that, it would be nice to see you. Absolutely great ride report (poseur)

I'll have a cold Dale's waiting for when you get back on your feet.

Hey Brad I enjoyed your ride report. Guess I'll just have to settle for the TAT, well sometime after my knee surgery. Arthroscopic, maybe I'll still get 10 day in on it yet.

Thumb Panama Red Brad

Thanks for taking the time to share the ride off the beatened path. I too like to keep the cost down while traveling and enjoyed your camping. Did I miss a page it seems you flew back across Mexico. I tend to get sick eating while traveling Mexico any route I take and need to hurry home. Welcome home and speedy recovery.

Captain Tom

Panama was my overseas duty station during Viet Nam so this was the return trip I always wanted to take. I like how you deal with boarder paperwork.

Staying tuned...

I'll keep this thread bookmarked to find out if you came home with Malaria.

The Semuc Champey shots were cool; I jumped off the same bridge in February. We missed the bus back to Lanquin and had to walk the 9 miles on those roads, partly in the dark. Did you buy any chocolate from the little kids?

Enjoyed the RR.
