LCD TV's - the good, the bad, the defective

I recently took possesion of a Visio 42" LCD TV.

It had problems from day 1.
It was repaired once, replaced twice and now Visio is going to give me my money back.

So the question is… Which TV should I get to replace it?

Any suggestions, ideas, especially models - brands to avoid?

JJ

Yeah I noticed that a 42" plasma used more power than an LCD of the same size. I also noticed a lack of brightness spec. The contrast was vastly superior. The rated life of 100,000 hrs equates to over 11 years of continuously on time, where as the LCD's have no such spec.

The Plasma's also, at least according to the specs, have a faster response time and can handle image motion better, at least those with the improved response engines anyway.

Yep. Unless you're looking at 120 or 240 hertz LCDs, which are definitely a whole different price range.

I've got the Viera plasma in the living room and a Viera LCD in the bedroom. Hockey definitely sucks on the LCD but everything else seems fine.

Just go down to Costco and see what's on display. It's a good way to compare screens in a bad lighting environment which seems to me to be closer to real life.

I asked myself that exact question just before I bought my Plasma.

Samsung LCD- Love it! Great motion response, as far as I can tell. It is cool to see the hockey puck flying around!

Now, if the local cable provider would just admit their digital HDTV sucks. Evidently, they think compression is a good thing. Network off the air signal is spectacular, almost 3d

Even if you're not a NASCAR fan, watching a race will really show the problems of a TV / signal.
