Dwellingup Dawdle - 12th & 13th Dec 2009
In my usual style, this ride report will be brief as I'm always pressed for time. Video will come soon (just like 'Chritsmas is coming soon!' ???)
This weekend getaway ride was born out of the ashes of a recent trip to Uluru and back. After returning from Uluru my next ride was a morning tarmac-only job out to York with Rene (KLR), Gary (KLR), and Greg (Hardly Sportster). Greg returned home early feeling a bit unwell, and Rene, Gary and I all returned home slightly frustrated at not getting off the tarmac.
Rene spoke up and said that he'd like an overnighter somewhere, and I checked my diary and found a free weekend, and that was the start. A post on advrider ('Any Perth Rides This Weekend' saw the numbers jump from three to ten-plus, I handballed the organisation over to Rob (Dr Trebor) as I was busy with things, a meeting place and time was agreed upon at the Salvation Army Charity Ride the preceeding weekend, and plans were locked in ...
09:30am down at Byford the main group (alternatively - the guys who wanted a sleep in) met up. Alan brought along his new 1200GSA and parked well away from the massing horde.
Riders mustering at Byford...
At the allotted time of 10:00am we cruised east out of Byford and headed on the tarmac to Jarrahdale, to meet up with the 250 boys.
Whilst Rob waited he tried some quick repairs to his DR fuel system, but they didn't work out so well, so...
When the whole group of eleven were together Rob stripped his bike down to look for the elusive fault...
"It's gotta be in here somewhere !!!"
As Rob worked on his bike a good samaritian stopped by with a trailer and two eskies full of ice-cold beer...
And in the predicted 37c degree heat the beer was a welcome relief...
Not so sure why Gary is grinning so much in this shot...
Refueling was completed in Dwellingup...
With Rob showing his appreciation for his now-working DR with a big thumbs up...
And Kevin grinning as usual...
We slipped into the Lane Poole Reserve just south of Dwellingup and looked for a swimming hole in the river to cool off at...
Before drying off and pushing further down the tracks towards our camping spot. Here Phil is having a bit of a rest...
Alan just can't wipe the smile off his face over the BMW...
Greg stretches out a little bit...
Alan still refuses to stop smiling...
Dan entertained everyone with his trip stories...
After this rest stop we didn't have too far to travel to the camp spot on the banks of the Murray River, but that didn't prevent us from splitting up into three or four minigroups, doubling back and forwards thru the tracks before we finally regrouped and found a camp spot large enough to take our eleven bikes and tents.
Gratuitious pic of my KLR. There's bound to be more photos of it to come :-)
I did warn you!
Alan and Jay returned from a failed attempt to find some beer, and were both lucky not to be lynched...
In the absence of cold beer I set about cooking dinner...
Whilst Phil chilled out a little bit...
And Kevin pondered his South Africa trip, coming up in 2011...
And Gav got on with his cooking duties...
All hail Dan!!! Succeeding where others had failed, Dan had returned with two cartons of beer and some bags of ice...
Dan describing some of the perils he encountered on his beer run, including the barmaids at the tavern that served him...
Alan redeemed himself by offering up his BMW panniers as eskies for the beer...
Dan was the first to savour his hard-earned beer...
Jay kicked off the evening's entertainment - Top Gear's Vietnam special, followed by some episodes of LWR...
What else is there to do on a Saturday night in the bush except drink beer and watch tv???
Sunday morning and the camp was very still at 05:30am...
And chilly as well, with fog over the river...
Or should that be 'smoke across the water' ???
Gary packing up...
Jay adding water to his Yamaha fuel tank... (not - he was only joking!!!)
Thumbs up from Rene after a good sleep in his swag...
Rene inspecting a few scars from a small slip yesterday afternoon...
Rene and Gary plotting a way out of the bush...
Morning tea was at Yarloop, where Rene, Gary and Alan peeled off early and headed back home...
Whilst Kevin and the others pushed on to Harvey to refuel...
In the heat, stopping in the sun wasn't all that much fun. Rob spotted some trout in the creek running beneath the bridge though...
So we headed out to nearby Hoffman's Mill to check out the maps in the shade of the tall trees...
Thank goodness I'd handballed the navigation to Rob...
Back inside Lane Poole Reserve...
Rob having a stretch...
Whilst the other guys rested...
Greg enjoying a short stop...
Bloody Kev is still smiling!!!
I do my best Darth Vadar impersonation...
Rob does his best Arnie impersonation...
Jay enjoys the thought of not coming off his bike at speed just a few minutes earlier on a slippery uphill corner...
Gav shows everyone how to really relax down at the midday swim...
Before we picked up the tarmac again and headed to the berry farm just west of Dwellingup, so Rob could get some rasberries.
At this point I bade the rest of the guys farewell and headed home on the tarmac in the searing heat. From what I have heard the guys pushed on up to Byford and had some fun on a steep hill climb - so watch out for their continuation of the story!!!
(ps: video to come soon okay!)

Rumour has it, next time his DR has a splutter, he's going to torch it and the insurance will be close to the value of a new KTM 640.
Bullshit aside, great ride guys, nice photos Vince, see you all in the new year.
