A lovely, solo, DS ride across half of Colorado

Sunday August 30, 2009

Summer has flown by this year! What with work, kids, and a mortgage, I haven't really had much time for dual sport riding. Today was the day to end the drought!

I live in God's gift to DS riders; Colorado. Anywhere I go is gonna be great right? Well, it aint half bad...

I did about 260 miles on my DRZ400 today, took some photos, maybe you will like them, maybe not. It was an incredible day for me today!

I posted up in the Rockies Regional Forum last night, looking for company, but no go for today. No big deal, solo rides are fun too. I can cover a lot of ground by myself, take photos, see new things. That's what DS riding is all about for me anyway. See new things...

7am departure from the mid-century mod house.

Really foggy this morning!

Riding west from home, up Deer Creek Canyon, to US285, west to county road 60 just below Kenosha Pass is fun on the DRZ, although a bit on the buzzy side. I like that particular stretch of twisties on my Tiger or Supersport a lot better. Thing is, those scoots can't take me here:

I know ADV Rider is a GLOBAL community with new members everyday. To all of you across the world,

"here" is climbing up Webster Pass from the south side. Kinda pretty 'eh?

On top of Webster Pass looking south. Webster Pass is about 12,145 above sea level, rocky and scree filled, and an absolute delight to summit at 8:45am on a Sunday. Nobody around as far as I can see....

This has got to be pretty close to the best way anyone could spend a Sunday morning. Dontcha think?

you suck. come to NY and ride in the woods where you can't see 20 feet in front of you for all the leaves and undergrowth and its muddy and tree roots always grow at a 45 degree angle to your desired direction.

and don't forget the pricker bush's and bugs.

So after a lovely summit I decided to try something new.

The last time I had been on Radical Hill was with this guy:

We rode down it back then. (like 2005 I think?)

Yes, so this time I thought it would be a good test of improvement in the riding skills to ride up Radical Hill.

So, if you haven't done it, it's nothing right? Well, Radical Hill, above Webster Pass was really somethin' for me today. Like I said, first time going up.

Not too bad for about half of the ascent, technical as I've done for the other half. The incline is something that is hard to describe, from an architectural stand point; slope = 35 degrees for most of it, the switchbacks kept me on my toes to say the least. Scree, sand and loose boulders along the whole trail. I didn't take pics of my bike on its side, twice, but this might give an idea of what it was like.

From the top:

But it was not easy for me...
