PHX - New Years Day Crown King

New Years Day ride up to Crown King!!

oldtimertc XR650L
Yardstick 450exc
rtgincnm Husky610
jrproper 570exc

We were to meet up at the airstrip as rtgincnm, from ABQ, was camping at a nearby Lake Pleasant campground. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=537735 Ride up the 'back way' to Crown King for lunch and back to the trucks a differnet way to make a good loop. Oldtimer and Yardstick would now the routes we took. I unfortunately was a little late and tried my darndest to catch them before getting to Crown King, but wasn't succesfull. Wow, was there a lot of people going up the mountain... probably 8 quads, a few Rinos and 20 something Jeeps/trucks that I had to maneuver around. One white Jeep in particular I had an issue with that would not move over for the slightest bit to let me go around. I wasn't going to risk forcing my way around as we were in the snow at that point and my luck, I probably would of fell on my a$$ right in front of them doing so. Followed him for about three miles right to the gas pumps/store where the other three happened to be. Well, they also had some issues to with the before mentioned white Jeep and oldtimertc had some words with the guys. Needless to say, we weren't very impressed with the dudes take on the situation.
Had lunch and then headed to the towers for the view.

No pics on the way up... in a rush to catch the guys.

Gotta throw up a couple pics of one of the towers from my wifes work that are up there

Now we know the story of jrproper's encounter with the Jeep. I think we all had it rough with that guy. I was the first to come upon him. He was cruising along okay, but only really going about first gear speed. I moved over to the left and saw him look at me in his rear view a couple of times while moving left to keep me from passing. I putted along for a little while until there was a nice wide (albeit short) spot in the trail. I thought he would slow a little, maybe move over and let me by (that's what usually happens and everybody is happy). As I started the pass, the Jeep seemed to speed up. It was taking more and more throttle to get ahead. I was headed for a ditch because he was so far to the left. Finally I was about even with his front fender, but I was spying a lot of rocks and dirt clods in the ditch so wasn't too excited about riding that out. I decided that if he wasn't going to let me by nicely, I was going to have to get by quick or potentially end up under his tires. I yanked open the throttle, the new knobbies bit in hard and I was out of there.

The old guy in the Jeep seemed to have the worst attitude of the three. I was trying to tell him that it seemed like they were aggressively trying not to let us pass and even sped up. I let him know that I thought they were tying to get me. He kept saying, "If we wanted to get you, we would have!" That's the attitude that'll keep me passing those types as fast as I possibly can.

After lunch we headed up the snowy, icy road to the lookout at tower mountain
