Retro RR Tibooburra circa 1983

Today I was doing some reflecting,,, no I was not standing in front of the mirror. I was sitting at Springwood Suzuki after ogling my ST1100 replacement bike Vstrom 650 with panniers etc etc......

Sorry back to the reflecting,,, I was thinking about how much things have changed. Things that we take for granted. Instant photos,, instant information at the fingertips... Anyway it got me to thinking to drag out some pics of a trip I did back in 1983.

Tranquil music playing in background

Anyway me and my 3 best mates at the time decided to goto Tibooburra. Man I did not even know where Tibooburra was let alone what was there. One of our group had heard there was gold in them thar hills and failing that there were goats to shoot and failing that there was nothing LOL.

We were all in the RAAF together and we all were working on MATRA Missiles,, how the hell we managed to all get leave at the same time I do not really know. So Ian (Pils), Chris,, Mick and me Mick plus the kid,, cannot remember your name,, scrounged two trailers, begged borrowed stole camping gear loaded up four bikes and headed off into the unknown.

If my memory serves me correctly we drove for two days from Newcastle too Broken Hill and then up the Silver City Highway to Tibooburra. Well just short of Tibooburra.

The trip up the heavily corrugated silver city highway was hard on the bike trailer breaking one of the shackles and every 100ks or so I had to stop to tighten up the bolts in thefront end of the HZ.

Would be funny if the guys who travelled on this trip were members of the forum coz I have know idea where they are today..

On to the pics

A cow somewhere

Down the creek bed just outside Tibooburra

Where we camped

The traditional campfire

Does my bum look big in these

We wanted to lynch the unamed kid

Flannel shirt,, coudroy pants all the rage back then

No one will notice me if I stand over here

Nowadays you would ditch the blurry pics

Trees LOL

Nature Really this is a crap photo,,, but you did not know you had taken a crap photo till you got it back from the developers

A bird

Trip into Tibooburra

The Family Hotel down town Tibooburra

We came into town for a much needed shower, supplies

Bike Riding in the good old days

Take one

Couple of points worth noting.

Thats me on the blue Suzuki TS 185 ahhh I remember it well, bought it brand new $999 rideaway..

Note the protective gear,, a CAT diesel go faster hat,, Belstaff Jacket and the dont fark with me .303 goat busting rifle...

Proof we shot some goats

Loading up the bikes in Tibooburra before leaving for home...

The road to bourke was open so we were told

A can of dewatering spray fixes everything

The water over the road looked bad so we went bush which was worse LOL.. Now WTF do we do

Lucky we had two cars and one was still on dry land so we unhooked the trailer and connected two long tie down straps onto it and pulled it out. Then we did the same with my car...

Chris was driving at the time so we made sure we got the "All my own work photo"

After axtracting ourselves out of bogs we drove on into the night. As we were driving on I thought my mind was playing tricks on me as my lights got dimmer and dimmer. Eventually the old HZ stopped

There we were right in the middle of the road, no food as the kid had scoffed the last of our biscuits. Pitch black night,,, then we hear the sound of a road train barreling along the road.

Closer and closer it got.... farkkkk!!!! hope he sees us.

Then to our releif it turned out to be an old landcruiser with no muffler

Anyway the window winds down and the occupant is quite clealy pissed (drunk for the foreigners)... He said sluringly " you all or ok,,, its cold the heatrs not workin but the dog is fartin so its ok."

Anyway he jumped started the HZ and promised to wait just down the road... I drove 200 ft and she stopped again. We never saw that guy again..

The next morning we pulled out the alternator and cleaned the brushes out that were jammed open from all the mud from the creeks. Just enough power to crank the V8 over.. then was off to home

The next morning showing where we stopped

Ahhhhhh want an adventure this was... Did not get any gold though but got some memories that will never fade...

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO - what a ride!"

Its funny thinking back,,, how many things that are available now, satphones, satelite tracking, gps, emergency beacons, digital cameras, forums like this one where you can research others who have done trips like this.

Back then there was nothing like that, you got stuck you had to wait till somebody came along or if somebody noticed you were missing.

What I would have given to have a digital camera back then

Your right, looks like one thing they had the design of right

Ahhh the good old 79 HZ Premier,, 5 litre V8, twin exhausts (oh my that sound),, Turbo Hydramatic transmission smooth as silk,, not that traumatic crap ,,, to this very day it was the one car I regretted selling... 3 Days after this trip I parked it in a friends driveway,, shortly his wife came inside and said your car is leaking water

I fully reconditioned replacement engine later I was told by the mechanics that the old motor had blown 4 welch plugs between the transmission and the gear box...

Loved that car

Great trip down memory lane Mick.

Got to love those old TS - - - ER bikes.

My first road legal bike was a blue TS50ER.

I believe the ERs came in 50,100,125,185, and 250 varieties.

Just can't make out the bike sizes on the side panels.
What displacement ERs were you boys riding in the bush back in the day?
