List of Replacement Alternator Belts
I needed to help someone find a replacement alternator belt on the road and waisted a lot of time searching for aftermarket numbers. I am sure you can understand how frustrating it can be trying to deal with the people who... lack imagination ;-) and that includes some dealers. I want to compile a list of replacement belts, please check and comment if you have additional information, Thanks!

Dana,
Thanks for putting this alternator belt list together. At the bottom of your posting, you have the new P/N Oilhead Poly-V Belt (Now called the ELAST Belt) # 4 PK 592 (07/2003 - CURRENT) 59.2cm = 23.30in --------------------------------------------------- 12 31 7 681 841 BMW current part number __________________ It's no longer called a Poly-V Belt by BMW. Since the introduction of the freewheel alternator pulley, the belt is now called the ELAST Belt. Never needs retensioning and is to be replaced every 36,000 miles. There is a special tensioning tool too. They call it ELAST because it is elastic and stretches. Some of the early applications with the freewheel pulley, got the standard Poly-V belt because of a supply shortage. These engines will have a White dot at the top of the front cover and a molded triangle at the bottom. The Poly-V Belt 'can' be used on the new freewheel pulley but the ELAST Belt 'cannot' be used on the early style pulley. BTW I've been using the Goodyear Gatorback belt on my '96 R1100RT for about a year now. 4040245 Mick

A little confused about the belts
I have both a '95 r1100r and a '01 r1150gs....and it's not clear from your posts which of these belts relates to which of my bikes???
Can you give me any clarification?? I'm interested, since both bikes are still running on the original belts and I know it's time to change them........36,000 miles on one(r1100r) and 25,000 miles (r1150gs)on the other... The r1100r is still running on the original v-belt.... Thanks for your help.. JIm Bud |

I must be stupid, but...
Are you saying these are all V-belts only and will only fit the early r1100 oilheads....but not the later r1150 with the flat type of belts??

Jim, These are ALL flat-style belts. They call them Poly-V belts because they are made with 4 small grooves. Like Dana said, look at the dates. 12 31 1 341 779 should fit both your Oilheads. Mick

Thanks for the clarification, but
don't the earlier oilheads have a true V type belt; except that they were then retrofitted with a Poly ( flat) type belt; if so, mine still has the original V belt...any thoughts??

Speaking of alternator belts... I attended the seminar on winning the Iron Butt (by Paul Taylor) last week at the BMWMOA rally, and spoke with Dick Fish afterwards. He had a great method for replacing an alternator belt on the road if your belt breaks (without taking out the three bolts to release the tension, etc.). Basically, take the cover off, put the new belt over the large pulley and start it onto the small pulley. Then get a 16mm (?) socket from the tool kit and place on the nut to turn the motor over and the belt will pop onto the small pulley. He said the entire process takes less than 5 minutes, with most of the time being spent taking off and putting back on the cover.
I haven't tried it yet, but it sure sounds like something to keep in your bag of tricks when your belt breaks at oh-dark thirty in the middle of nowhere. |
