Okay, Day 3 and Leisureclub and I are up at the buttcrack of dawn for some reason. We decide to do a little on-foot exploring across from the store:

The yellowbreastedmotherfucker:

Apparently Fields was home to some rather rare bird last year and people (birders) came from all over to check it out. We of course made a joke about it.

The weather was still looking a little foreboding:

The plan today was to head north and then west, with the eventual pass-thru of Diamond and then hopefully Wagontire. This "plan" did not pan out, as you shall see.

We ate a humongous breakfast (Stroup did NOT do the Navy proud, leaving almost all his hashbrowns on his plate) and headed east along the powerline road. Usually there are silt beds out this direction, today they are slickier than snot. You could feel the back end drifting around, just like on snow or ice. It felt like one false move and you'd be on your side...

Stroup Doggy Doo:

Shot of the trip from me:

We gotta cover some ground today, long way to go, as planned anyway... We head what seems to be waaaay east, then cut back northwest thru this fun wash. Well, fun for some...

oops...

We were wondering if Mr. KMA rides too?

After the great riding on the morning of day two through the trouts, and the missed opportunity to ride the Pueblos that afternoon, I was looking forward to something cool. We left Fields after a humongous breakfast and immediately hit some great riding; fun powerline road, slick as snot plays mud, full on sand, desert washes, we were flogging the hell out of our bikes and it was a fargin blast. The rain was always threatening but didn't catch us fully untill we arrived at our night three camp site. Some pics....

Hashbrown evidence.

Our digs the night before.

Couple a hooligans.

Bacon with air under his tire again, dustclouds of Jim and Greg in the distance.

My view from the unfortunate and tragic take a piss/zipper/helmet drop/dick skin/save the bike from falling incident.

So we come out the end of the wash, KMA manages to right his bike all by himself, we pass the dudes from Bend in the yellow Range Rover that we had met in Fields the day before and seen out on the playa and we come upon Stroup flailing his arms in the air waving us off. Hmm, wassup? This:

Wouldn't you like to see this thing when it's flowing??

We finally make it out of the monkey dunes and washes on the east side of the playa and press east towards Mickey hot springs... but first, some bike maintenance and Vienna Sausage dumpage. Heinous. They leaked in Stroup's pack. THAT's never gonna come out!

The six fingered ADV salute:

The weather is paralleling us...

And here's where boxer-wearing Stroup realizes that cycling shorts really aren't all that expensive after zipping Mr. Happy into his Klim riding pants, dropping his newish Bell Moto into the rocks and nearly toppling his bike:

This is also where we make a little navigational blunder and head waaay too far east. Turning around is not an option because we may become gas challenged at some point. The upside is our new destination includes another HOT SPRING BABY!

KMA:

Pressing on I catch up to KMA and Leisure, but soon find that Stroup is not behind me. After waiting several minutes I backtrack to find him just about done fixing his rock-eating BRP. The chain sucked up a rock somehow and in turn spit the chain off. Yikes!

Long story short here, but we take a really fun two-track across to Hwy. 78, ride thru a torrential downpour, dry out and hit the town of Crane for lunch-ish. We gas up and cruise 3 miles up the road to the hot spring for the night.

Thunderstorms are looming to our west, to the point that the really nice owner comes around to let us know about the 5 second rule. Crack-boom, 5 seconds or less and we gotta get out.

Tents are up, sans rain flys for a couple.... I'll let them tell that story.

Did we already show this one? I forget...

Just some pics, Brad tells the story well, slab it to Crane as we'd travelled too far East to do much else, especially with the weather the way it was.

We ate lunch here

Setting up camp, the first of three times for some of us rainflychallenged.

What it looked like soon as my tent was set up.

Day four teaser;

More............but not much...........

Okay, let's finish this puppy up...

Here's how we spent Saturday evening after we got out of the amazing 104 degree water. (If you haven't been to Crystal Crane HS you need to make a trip)

The beer and whiskey were polished off and we found an episode of the "Trailer Park Boys" on the tube. In the meantime, Leisure and KMA were offered the use of the TeePees for no additional fee. The owner felt sorry for the puppy dog eyes of the rainfly-challenged. Stroup and I just laughed as the weather could not challenge the mighty Eureka! tents!

Those injuns' sure know how to live...

I'm not sure just how much I actually slept. Even with earplugs deep in my ear canals the rain was pummeling the Eureka! and keeping me awake. I don't think the injuns fared much better. KMA was getting dripped upon.

At about 6:44 and 30 seconds Stroup fires the mighty BRP. WTF??? I'm thinking "what a dork, he starts his bike to ride over to the hot pond????" I grab my shorts and towel (still raining, btw) and pop out and am intercepted by Stroup and Leisure who are already packed and dressed and ready to slab it all the way back to Bend in the 40 degree rain. "You guys have fun with that, I'm getting in there." was my reply. They head out shortly after with KMA and I shaking our heads...

KMA and I spend about a half-hour in the hot pond, get dressed (back in the sleepy clothes mind you...) and head into the lounge. The weather report says it's supposed to improve as the day wears on. Yeah, and I ride like Bubba Stewart.

KMA checking the weather...again.
