Katie in Campo. Jury is still out whether she really is pregnant or not (this happened well before our arrival), however, she did serve us in her pajamas....modest though they were.

J-L's got the group pic at the restaurant.

Ah the first day you guys covered all my local stopping grounds I wished I had known about your ride I would have ridden along the first section and even given you a few detours of dirt to avoid some of the pavement you had to ride Did you guys go UP Thomas Mountain?

Speaking about pajamas, here is Berti in our luxury cabin:

First real day of the PCQ with the lake or what's left of it:

South California is certainly hot and dry...

We quickly had to learn how to cope with dust...

... and rebellious gear

OK - day one is just about over already

A sense of openness and vista quickly became thematic for the entire trip.

The PCT takes the high ground. That's the place to be on a bike as well. I think this photo was taken on Puerto la Cruz Rd. As we headed north from there through Banning on paved roads, we're reminded that civilization is quickly taking some of the high ground. In fact, almost every time we left National Forest and began to touch on private land, our options diminished. Either ranchers or subdivisions choke off access. We encountered our first locked gate just north of Banning on what would have been a great trail to follow. A quick jog to the west and we were on our way along side the San Gorgonio Wilderness with Mt. San Bernardino towering above. No GS trails there.

With fire closures at Crab Flats and pending holiday traffic around Lake Arrowhead we found a wonderful dirt by-pass just to the south of Big Bear Lake.

It was getting late on and the fatigue factor of our first real day out was starting to creep up. Nonetheless, this rather technical but awesomely fun road turned out to be a highlight of the day. As I remember, Berti had his first big biff.

I kept looking at the speedo and wondering how we were going to get to Canada at 10mph. BTW, Seven Pines Road. continues west past Point 18. We did not loop south through San Bernardino as indicated. It just doesn't appear on this map. (I'll insert the FR# sometime later). For anyone riding in the area, you gotta check out this road. It takes about two hours from east to west.

Here's another cool shot Aaron took along Seven Pines Rd.

We lucked into a little campground in Crestline just before dark. Had a pound O 'prime rib at the local saloon. 250 miles on the first day, put us in a fine frame of mind about what the rest of the trip might be like.
