Your opinion...6.7 Cummins or 6.7 Powerstroke (Scorpion)?...and why?
Gentlemen,
First, let me apologize for another truck/diesel thread. I've searched ADV, and read quite a few of the threads that I've found. Unfortunately, many are general, and do not specifically address just these two motors. In addition, many threads turn-into leg-humping-fests for the 5.9 Cummins and the 7.3 Powerstroke. I've owned and worked both, and already have established opinions. So, for the purposes of this thread, pretend you just met a guy who is about to purchase one of these two heavy-lights (brand new), within the next five minutes, and would like to know which one you would buy, if you were in his place...and why. Three things to consider... 1. There will be no DPF-deletes, no dirty tunes, etc. This "Fantasy Land" truck will remain stock. 2. This truck may wind-up being a "five-quarter" (4500 or 450). So, since the OEM tunes are different, for the bigger trucks, please include any pros or cons that you wish. 3. The buyer hauls ass, everywhere and all the time. (*I put this because ALL trucks tow well at 60-65 MPH. 75-80 separates the men from the boys.) Thanks in advance. *If you despise me, from JM (or anywhere else on this site), that's okay. This thread is about the trucks, not me. So, I would still appreciate your opinion. .

Ram 6.7L
I have this rig. Live on the road full time for past year.
Cummins is the real deal , has tow/haul mode for tranny AND Exhaust Brake. Don't tow over 60mph though , due to trailer tire rating. Truck would certainly tow much faster. Truck is Ram 2500 Crew Cab 8' Box , all bone stock (100K warranty). If needed I can add extra leaf springs to increase load capacity .

Latest issue of Trailer Life has a small news piece that the 2014 Dodge 3500 Cummins is rated to tow 30,000#. That is NOT counting the weight of the truck itself.
850 ft/lbs of torque. Proven engine design. Only diesel that can be bought with a manual trans. imho, Ford has produced a few lemon engines after the 7.3. |

Having driven neither, I'd go Dodge. Ford keeps experimenting with engines.

IMO Ford makes a better truck overall, but Dodge puts a better diesel in their diesel trucks than Ford and makes an okay truck.
If the deciding factor is which diesel is better, then get the one with the Cummins. That said, you can get an F650 with a Cummins

Since I'm content w/ my '05 Dodge, I haven't done any meaningful research on the subject, however, I'll be watching this topic.
And, of course, I look forward to the follow-up oil thread. |

diesel
they are both good engines. I have the 2012 F250 with the 6.7 liter diesel and i love it. Getting terrific mpg as well. The cummins is fantastic and the guy I hunt with has it in a 2010 one ton dually Dodge. The front suspension has been maintenance nightmare on his Dodge. he doesn't abuse or work the truck hard, tows a camper only and it isn't heavy.
I think both engines are fantastic but the rest of the truck the Ford has the better truck for ME....just my opinion. Check residual values and the Ford may beat the Dodge in a couple years with the 6.7. ford's 6.0 and 6.4 that was not the case at all.

Sudden flashbacks to a bus I drove with a DD 8V92. I know, not the same thing at all but bear with me.
When dealing with diesels, V configuration is asking for trouble. Straight is simpler and reduces off axis forces on the whole package. Thus Cat, Cummins, DD 60, Intl 360 & 460 are all much longer operating engines under VASTLY heavier use than Intl 444 and any PS engines. Let the hating begin
