Mexican 1000: Camping in Mexicali?

I'm hoping to roll down to Mexicali mid-September to check out the start of the Mexican 1000 which is like the Baja 1000 only limited to vintage trucks, buggies & bikes. I may either be truck camping, or bike camping and am looking for recommendations. I've only been to Mexico a couple of times, had a great time at Pete's Camp in San Felipe and found that to be a good deal - park under the palapa for $10 a night etc. If anyone is planning on heading down for the event let me know also, looks like I'll be solo so far.

Remember, never cross the border or ride at night!

Ah yes, and never do the military check point at night, don't take any wrong turns through shanty-ville at night, and stay away from the carne de puerco.... Especially at the Iguana....

don't go to mexico alone or at all. i would rather have USA sand packed in mythan ride to mexico alone for it! your brave you must be married. married men aren't afraid of anything. thats why some of us ride like we do. we've seen our death it's what we do now before it comes for us that matters.

No, I just don't let the news media influence my perceptions of other places and whether or not I choose to travel there or not. Besides you live in PHX anyway, it's not much different. As far as your sandy ass packing - well - that's all you dude...
