Cell service in Alaska...

Heading to Alaska (without the bike ) next week & I'm wondering what type of cellular service is available in those parts?

BTW, I'm a Verizon subscriber.

I've got business visitors coming up all the time and live in Anchorage. Some of 'em seem to have no problem at all w/ cell connections, others have a huge problem ...but I've never cared enough to ask which services offer decent connectivity here and which don't.

Generally speaking, a good service will offer ok coverage in the Anchorage and Mat-Su area, same in Fairbanks. Outside those bounds though is extremely unreliable at best and the problem's compounded by our mountainous terrain.

My experience w/Verizon in various locales.

1/ No messages of any kind picked-up by the phone (including missed calls) until I got back to Atlanta. So if anyone leaves you a message, or even calls and doesn't reach you, don't count on finding out until you get back.

2/ Anchorage OK dialing in and out. Fairbanks ditto. Homer ditto.

3/ No service in: Nome, Kotzebue, Barrow.

4/ Needless to say, no service in small Native villages. I honestly can't remember about the Portage glacier area, or towns between Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The largest network in the state is operated Alaska Comm. Systems. I was told by them that when I travel to lower 48, I will be on the Verizon network. I know my phone options are Verizon offerings. So, you shoud be OK in most towns in southeast and southcentral Alaska. Southeast is the panhandle( Juneau, Ketchikan) and southcentral ( Anchorage, Seward and Kenai penninsula ).
