TW-200, KLX 250 NJ Pine Barrens Adventure

Mustang2NY posted a thread here on ADVrider looking for riding partners in the Pine Barrens. I noticed that he lived a few short miles from me and shot him off an email...........A month later he retrieved my email from his spam filter, wrote me back and quickly plans were made for a dual-sport ride in the NJ Pine Barrens.

Lucky for me, Mustang had actually been there before AND has a van capable of handling both our bikes with ease. He has the Kawasaki KLX 250, the best looking (IMHO) dual-sport bike made today and it only has 50 miles on it! Mustang tells me he's going to go easy on it as it's not even broken in. I have a Yamaha TW-200 and a BMW G650 Xcountry, but opt to leave the XCountry home. The Metzler Tourance tires on the BMW are terrible in mud and sand. The little Yamaha with it's fat knobbie tires is perfect for the terrain in the Pine Barrens.

Talking

We got a fairly early start and arrive ready to ride in Burlington County NJ, somewhere in the neighborhood of 11am. We were hungry, needed a bathroom, gas and somewhere to park the Van. Mom's Deli provided 3 out of 4. After emptying our bladders filling our bellies and backpack, we head out in search of Gas. We find a nice friendly Getty station nearby, and now we are truly on our way

We head out onto 70w for a mile or so, then a quick left down a wide dirt road.......I'm grinning..Another right down a single track that's whooped out for at least a mile! The terrain is running from packed dirt to soft sand.....Mustang is cursing his tires. The soft stuff is pretty unnerving 'till you get a feel for it.

After a few miles of exploring, we come upon a giant motorcycle wonderland of hills, berms, jumps, puddles and trails leading off in all different directions! This was very cool!

For the next few hours we explored many trails and even hit some asphalt as here in the Wharton National Forest.

I had BRAND NEW gear that NEEDED to get muddy. I was hitting every mud puddle with a vengeance. Mustang on the other hand was in jeans and work boots. He was skirting most of the puddles; especially the big ones.

We were coming up on, what looked like an awesome puddle 10 or more feet across. Mustang in the lead, tried to ride along side the edge of the water, but the edge (or wall) of the "puddle" gave in, pitching him sideways. Mustang swung out his leg, but it was swallowed up by 2 feet of water! SPLASH! The KLX tips over, pushing Mustang into the monstrous puddle up to his chest! I ask if I can get a picture.....He says Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?......So I amble into the muddy pool and help him (I wasn't much help) wrestle the KLX up onto the shore. I suddenly find out my $63 Fly Racing Motocross boots are not waterproof. Not even close. A short time later I got these shots of him after he was done emptying HIS boots. The look says it all.

This was a good example of a particularly treacherous soft sandy stretch that claimed Mustang's KLX and nearly my TW as well. The terrain changes very quickly and you have to adjust your riding style instantly or you're toast.
