Fire tree in WA, think they started using it as a lookout in the mid 1800s. It's the tallest tree around.

Awesome. Rebar driven into a tree for a spiral staircase.
This has to be the coolest LO design ever.

The pyramid lookout has 3/4 inch thick copperwire on two of the corners going to ground. Think it'd be cool to be inside there in a thunderstorm, but also scary as hell

Another Weekend... another Lookout Visited.
Ironside Mtn Lookout, Near Willow Creek CA. The lookout was nearly destroyed by fire last summer. Only wrapping the structure in mylar foil saved the day. ![]() Views from the lookout were hazy... the 'Backbone' fire is burning about 10 miles north.

Another 'Lookout' Ride
Picketts' Peak Lookout. This one is located on South Fork Mountain, on the ridge above Mad River and Ruth... it is being abandoned. The catwalk was locked up, water and propane Tanks were disconnected and the shutters were down. Picketts peak really isn't much of a peak, more just a high spot on the ridge.. and the view from the base of the LO wasn't very spectacular. But the ride sure was.
![]() Same day, further south on South Fork Mountain, the Horse Ridge LO. This one was occupied by a woman, her dog, and lots of hummingbirds (she had a half-dozen feeders around the tower... the red spots in the photo). Unfortunately there were not many good 'vistas' today. A lightning storm a couple days before our ride started a number of fires. None of them were very big (yet), but were enough to cast a pall of smoke over the countryside. ![]() From the same ride, a very weathered 'Old School' USFS sign. Middle of nowhere NW California. A different soil type up here results in some very open forest with barren shale patches. This is a wild and lonely place in the winter. ![]() A bit of wisdom posted on a paper plate at the famous Hyampom store. ![]() Some odd's and sods from the day. Skylined KTM 690. 100% Orange 'n Black 'n Blue. ![]() End of the ride conversation at the north end of the Kneeland-Bridgeville road. 250-odd miles for the day, nice mix of tarmac and dirt. A few miles back we had passed by some Cal Fire crews headed out to take on one of the spot fires.

Okay. This is my new favorite thread. I love firetowers. I can also tell that I really should be living somewhere near the Rockies, as the views you guys have out there are nothing short of amazing.
That Tree Top Firetower is great. Never seen anything like that. But here's a few east coast towers for your viewing pleasure. Secret firetower close to home: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Somewhere in South GA along 441, headed to Florida. (Just realized I somehow do not have pics of the actual tower )![]()
