Near Crystal Lake. A tiny alpine lake formed by an ancient volcanic crater, extremely deep, kinda like a miniature version of Crater Lake in OR.

Red Top Lookout

Big Hill - Employee housing! Sadly the actual lookout was torched, burnt down by the Forest Service along with many other lookouts in the early 70's.

Oh yea good riding to be had also...

Cheers to ya all!

This view is from the top of Grand Bay WMA's tower. It's about a mile hike from the parking area. We used to hang here in college. You'll usually see some gators on the way, and if you're lucky some jets or choppers from Moody AFB across the swamp will be practice flying. They get pretty close to the tower and we've actually seen a fighter pilot wave at us. My favorite place in Valdosta, GA.

It's a popular spot

This is the view from the ground under the fire tower. The view from the top would be good but the stairs are fenced off so people don't climb it. Apparently it's not in safe condition.

But it doesn't stop everybody.

Bagged Three in One Day...

From an epic 275 mile ride to visit 3 lookouts in 'extreme' NW California. Iron butt stuff.

First the Red Mtn LO... it is only manned during expected lightning storms... (lightning... yeah, great time to be up in a steel tower). Note the snow markers, each about 16' high. They are there to guide repair techs in the winter (with sno-cats) to the repeater stations up there. I only got a couple decent photos from this site. The countryside was pretty hazy, smoked in from a fire to the SE of our location.

Next the Ship Mountain LO... this one is manned during the summer. The gal on duty this weekend was friendly and informative... she pointed out all the landmarks to us, including another 'unofficial' lookout to visit. I think she was happy to have some company up there... she invited us to "bring your familes up with a picnic lunch!"

Ship Mtn from a ways off... up on the point.

Closer (note the 'Happy Throttle' roost marks from the KTM 950)

Closer yet

Happy riders on the catwalk.

Now to 'Bear Buttes' (great name eh?) This is an old USFS lookout that was relocated from 'Camp Six' to the Bear Buttes in a cooperative venture between a local businessman and the USFS.

He was allowed to build a visitors cabin just down from the LO too... it's rented out to the public with the proceeds going to the USFS. (with a long waiting list) We were lucky and arrived when the maintenance crew was up at the site, otherwise there is a locked gate at the bottom of the road. (privacy for whoever is renting the site). They graciously gave us the keys to open up the LO station and showed us around the cabin. It's an awesome spot.

Coming up to the LO.

Trail up from the cabin.

Inside the LO...

The old Fire-finder

And a couple views...

And this is the view from the Cabin Window...

Somebody made a key to the terrain..

I wondered why they called this basin 'Devils Punchbowl'. One of the guys doing maintenance on the cabin pointed it out.

Finished up down on the Smith River again...

Yes, the water really is that color.

So many lookouts... so little time.

My dog, Ollie, on the catwalk. I spent a week in August on the lookout as a volunteer fire watcher.

On any Sunday... another Lookout Bagged.

Today's score was an easy day ride from Eureka to the Brush Mtn Lookout, near Willow Creek CA.

First stop after escaping the coastal gloom (fog)... near Horse Mtn on Forest Highway (FH1).

On to a small forest lake (algae filled, muddy, cattle-trampled pond) a few miles further up FH1. It always amazes me that cattle are allowed to trample fragile parts of the landscape but the USFS freaks out about a motorcycle track. Go figure.

20 or so nice backwoods miles later... The lookout.

A couple views of the mountains...

Still a bit smoky... only 1 major fire going though.

Looking down to the Trinity River and Hwy 96 near Willow Creek.

And looking down from the tower at the Dakar.

It was very homey inside this lookout.

Becky, the lookout gal filled us in with Bigfoot stories and lore. In the photo she is pointing to the spot where she saw Bigfoot when arriving at the tower.

Perfect end to a perfect day... Bacon/Cheeseburger/Mushroom at Toni's Drive In.

Lookout Tower in Big Horn Mtns., Wyoming

First photo shows lookout itself, where all these photos were taken. It seems the lookout has fallen into disuse. I'm a little embarrassed to admit I don't know the exact location of the lookout, I just know it's located somewhere between Ten Sleep, WY, and the Shell Valley of the Big Horns, at approx. 10k feet. Just one of the many stops on a loop from the Badlands of SW North Dakota, down to the Black Hills of South Dakota, through the Big Horns over to Red Lodge, Montana, for the Beartooth Beemers Rally in August (I'll be posting a separate ride report about the whole trip when I get a chance).
[IMG][/IMG]

This photo is a long-view of our bikes on the loop near the lookout with the Big Horns in the background.
That's my WR250R, and my friend, Jeff Bonebrake's KLR (yeah, that's really his name!).

[IMG][/IMG]
Another view of the bikes. Note the BBQ grill held on by wingnuts screwed to the KLR's panniers. You just never know, do ya?
[IMG][/IMG]
A view of the road, approaching the lookout.
[IMG][/IMG]
A more distant view of the road to the tower.
