Eek Melbourne Australia to the Gold Coast...and only half way back PART 2

This is an update on where this finished up at 12 months after the event. If you read it last year and know how it ends I've added a few photos and updated my condition after 12 months so read on or go to the end

Its been difficult to get started on this ride report as I'm still coming to terms with the ending, and as endings go............this one fucking sucked!

Here's how it started...

Ive been tossing around the idea of riding from Melbourne in southern Australia to the Gold Coast in South East Queensland to see an Uncle of mine I haven't seen for a few years.
He's a Kiwi (New Zealander) but a good bloke (some aren't) so I had the time available on holidays, the good lady wife didn't so a leave pass was negotiated for 2 weeks to "do my own thing"
I also needed to do something with my 14 y o son who wasn't connecting with me and I felt I should have some time away , just me and him........character building for us both!
For those who dont know, its a round trip of 4000klm's........a big one in distance and tough on the pillion as they can , if not "into it"suffer mind numbing boredom for 5 days up and possibly back.;
Tough on a 14 year old but I thought I'ld see if it was OK..........

The conversation went something like this...........

So.you think we could do a ride together?

.................................................y eah.......

To Queensland , to see your Great Uncle George

.................................................y eah........

Its a long trip............2000klms...........probably 5 days on the bike, camping along the way, pretty rough.........

.................................................y eah...........

We might get hot, cold, wet, its windy and you'll get a sore backside from sitting all day on the bike................................

.....................Dude!................I'll be OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So its decided.......were going, leaving on the Easter Sunday.
I have to get him back for school starting the next week so I book him a flight back to Melbourne leaving on the Sunday morning so we have 7 days to do 2000 klms................easy?....................Not quite..........

Heres the load on the WeeStrom Sunday 9.00am start................

Camping gear, sleeping bags, food, clothes, we got the lot!!

Here's the players........................................

We'll call this one "Mark"

And this one is Nicholas................maybe Undersea2x1????

So we start out through the back door, Lilydale, Yea heading for smoko in Mansfield at about 11.30am.....................................so far so good.
We leave Mansfield with meat pies and hot chips consumed for the next leg up thru Whitfield, Beechworth and on to Jingellic to camp on the Murray River for the first day of about 460klms.
Were cruising along the King Valley Hwy when I feel Nick lean on my back...............and then again.................must be stretching or moving around for a better position.
Then he leans into me ..................more like flops against my back.........he's asleep...................at 110klm/hr!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do I do???................I shove back in the seat and he sits up.......no comms so I cant ask him if he did so I continue to the next town for a "talk"

What happened back there??

Nothing..........................

You sure?

Yeah..............................

We need to talk about this...............did you nod off back there??

No............

You sure??

Maybe.................No............Yes........... ...I think so.............sorry?

I assure him it's OK but we have to plan for some stops to rest and talk to keep focused. How do we do that???

See the extra large can of Vee on the table?
I pushed one of those into him at about 3,00pm every day for the rest of the trip..........had him on a caffine high for hours...........no more nodding off.................problem solved.

Here's a shot of the camping area at Jingellic on the Murray river.
See the low area behind the bike? there was a dump of about 1 inch of rain the night before and flooded the area up to knee height and drowned all the tents out..............everyone went home and left us all this space ...............sweet!

The Murray River in front...............................

And the pub behind................beeeeutiful..............

End of day 1

We leave Jingellic at about 9.00am and head north again for Tumut and the Wee Jasper road , our first bit of dirt and I've been assured its easy.................not as easy as i'd like

Heres a bridge just out of Tumut

Just before the weird pine forest and the car load of Asian mafia types who WERE BURYING A BODY BECAUSE THEY HAD NO REASON TO BE IN A PINE FOREST

Sorry but it was weird..................moving on to Wee Jasper and another Vee break!!!

I decided Cowra would be the stop for the night so off we go into thickening rain clouds until we're 10 minutes out of Cowra and this hits us.......

Its a bit hard to see but it dumped on us to the point I couldn't see the traffic if front except for the water spraying off their wheels...................not when I love riding a bike!
We looked at Motels as we wern't camping in that weather and took the 1st place we stopped at.................$92/ night.............sopping wet..............Does it have a heater????? .......we'll take it.

Nice warm bed..............................

and somewhere to dry the gloves...........................Good night............

End of day 2 432klms for the day

More tomorrow

Cheers

my daughter used to go to sleep while on the back of my old Yamaha 1100 when she was just a little tacker. Scared the heck out of me I tell you! I bought a simple helmet to helmet intercom, problem fixed! Riding became a lot more relaxed on both rider and pillion combined.
We chatted about the scenery, the traffic and most importantly we both stayed awake!
I felt for you while reading your report mate, well done.

Looking forward to the remainder????????????

Cheers

Day 3
Cowra to Tamworth

An early start after all the gear dried out and with the Macca's breakfast to fill your guts with crap we're away on the very boring and heavely Policed Western Hwy to Bathurst and .................The Mountain ...........

Mt Panorama race circuit is a Mecca for australian petrol heads to get there yearly fix of Holden (GM) V Ford motor racing in the Bathurst 1000.
The rest of the year the track is......................a road so you can have a hot lap around it ................as long as its at 60klm/hr as the cops would like nothing better than adding to the State revenue by booking you for testing yourself on the track.

On the starting grid..................................facing the wrong way for those who know!...........

Have a look in the mirror at the photographer................................no hands I'm so proud!!!

Coming over Skyline and looking at those clouds that kept up with us all day.

I decided to stop for lunch in Sofala as we were going to have a look at the Bridal Track as I had rtead a lot about it here on the forum.
Unfortunatly I was told if its been raining and your loaded 2 up on a Strom be very very careful.
So I was careful and decided that I would do it on the way back home as I was going to be alone with less gear.
Funny how things dont work out .............never made it that far.

Main Street Sofala style........................bring your own lunch...........even the dogs were asleep.

Missed out on lunch..........................not happy Jan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From here we went thru Mudgee, Gulgong (lunch), Dunedoo To Coolah for a break and a look at the map and a guesstimate on our stop for the night.
Tamworth looked good but on the way we came across a genuine piece of Australian folklore........................

The Black Stump!!!

Read the sign for a history lesson on some of our National Heritage.....

A little bit further on we turned east to Premer and some pretty impressive scenery

The mountains must have been the Coolah Tops and although the picture doesn't do the justice the mountains formed an ampetheater that looked fantistic.......................................Yo u had to be there!!

Top that off with our ever present friends.................

I was thinking...............................any minute now its gonna bust

Anyhow as it turned out it didn't and we got into Tamworth at about 5.30 and into the Golden Grain Motel for Pizza and cokes for dinner

A huge day today with over 560klms done and we're both Knackered

Day 4 and 5

Tamworth to Nymbodia

Away at 10.00am as we were as usual sending my hard earned to the USA via McDonalds Corp.
It has to be done......................
we also stopped at the Powerhouse Motorcycle Mueseum and got a guided tour from the caretaker.........................
Why the special treatment????
Its 9.00am on a Wednesday...............we're the only tyre kickers up and about!!!
Some really good stuff in there. The story is the bloke that owns it owns the motel next door (The Powerhouse Motel) and this is his hobby.
Must be money in Motels!!

Pick your favorite................

He'll grow up...........................

We push on to Uralla for smoko and turn off on the Waterfall way for lunch at Ebor and a look at the falls the area is renowned for.

Lunch in Ebor, good place with heaps of memorabilia but one of the most miserable knobs behind the counter I've ever met................had the shits with the world.

Also had to explain this............................go figure?

Wollomombi Falls

Ebor Falls................

We turned off the Waterfall Way and headed to Nymbodia to a Canoe Course and camping area I had heard of and the road up therewas fantastic .................................except for the stream of cattle shit and piss left by a preceeding truck in exactly the riding line thru ALL the corners
There must have been a hundred cows in that truck 'cause that line of shit/piss went for 80klms!!!!!!

Just out of Nymboidia there's a pub called The Comfort Station owner by our own pet Kiwi ....................Big Russ Crowe!!!!!

Really nice pub and a great atmosphere for knocking a few down!!!

They wouldn't serve him a beer so a magnum was just the ticket!!!

The tent still had to be put up so off we went to the camp ground about 5 k's further on

Doesn't show it but the grounds flooded as there was over an 2 inches of rain the previous day and again...........flooded out the campers.........and again................... we miss a really big dump by a day!!!
Lucky hey!!

There is a competitive canoe course here thats build on the outlet for a small hydro power station it looked good and we decided to stay for the day and stuff around on it.
Well worth it!!!

The better bit was there was cabins for $22/night so we dried and packed the tent and slept in a pretty standard bed but ...............no packing a wet tent in the morning

And we got this for the bike.............

And this for us after a big steak and a few beers and cokes at The Comfort Station

Russ wasn't there

Total for the 2 days was 300klms

Day 6

Nymbodia to Gold Coast

Nice easy pack up and off to Grafton for Maccas .......again

Two story Maccas.....................................got to keep an eye on the bike

Nick had had about all he could take of riding so he was pushing to get to my Uncles place so we went along the Summerland way to Casino, Kyogle and Murwillimbah for lunch.
A quick break where we started dumping the liners from the jackets and pants as it really heated up during the day.

We arrive in GC at 12.30

Total for the day 285 klms and the trip total 2005klms
The next 2 days are taken up with catching up with cousins and kids and just relaxing at the beach.

That the finish of Nicks trip as he's on a plane on Sunday and I'm on my way back on Monday so another 2000ks on my own to go.......................

or so I thought?

More tomorrow

Cheers

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO - what a ride!"

Homeward bound

Day 9

The Return leg started at 8.30 with fond farwells to my Uncle George......

Love hugging a man in his Jimjams!!!
So, after that I'm away thru Nerang and Beaudesert and head to theLions Rd which had heard so much about on the forum

Really good green country and easy flowing road , settle into a nice easy rhythem and....................................look out!!!!

Lucky for me I was not coming from the other direction.........................mince steak with a Suzuki side salad!!

The Border Ranges Nat. Pk??

So I finish the ride thru some hills and then farmland and get into Kyogle.
Where to go next?????????????

Lets have a look at Nimbin............
Nimbin is the centre for "alternate cultures" in the Northern coast of New South Wales and .............Weed , Gungah,Mary jane..whatever you want to call Mary Juana!!
So I roll into town all toughed up on my "Adverture Tourer " and ............order a Latte............one sugar please, hold the cookies!
I just want to look around and see how it happens and maybe buy a little sample and take it home, you know , for recreational use only!
The deal(sorry) is you walk up the main street and sellers mumble to you "Wanna buy some grass??" just for your ears only, no big deal.......
I get a few "mumbles" and pass on them, then I see a lane where some local Aboriginals are and walk down there.
"You lookin' for some Gungah????
Yes I say, and also for some cookies.
"Hey!!!, he wants some cookies as well"
No mumblers down here!
So I get the grass, $50.00 /bag and the cookies $20 for 4 off.
I tuck the goods into my jacket and I'm out of there!
As I travel I get the guilts and start thinking............have they got a Police car up ahead, waiting to catch the "Dope heads" in a sting operation?????

Concentrate on what your doing............

I stop for fuel in Kyogle and head towards Casino and then turn off to Tenterfield. really good ride along the Bruxner Hwy except for the ...................grass, burning a hole in my pocket! I have to stop and hide it in my Top Box in a bag in a Metho Cooker. Paranoia starting and I haven't ever tried it yet!

More on that later.

Lunch in Tenterfield

Then South on a very boring New England Hwy for Armidale.
Just as I approached Guyra I began to feel the cold until it got to 10C at 4.00pm!
On with the winter gloves and as usual , in the bottom of the top box.
Pulled into Armidale on dark for a $75 room and a Steak at the pub.

635klms for the day and rain tomorrow............

More later

Cheers

Look a like

Hey Mark, you look like your uncle.
I think this story is going to end with a new bike (one day).
You better not leave us with a cliff hanger.

Guessing this ends in an "off", however I'm enjoying every bit of this. Looking foward to doing something of this nature with my own sons one day.

Thanks for sharing Undersea, trust they looked after you in the "John Hunter"
