I was afraid of that. It figures that I just had the thing apart for valves & cables.

Fortunately, winter is coming fast to the colonies, plenty of time for indoor projects and not much use for scooters.

I just found I had a small Oil Leak from the Rear of the Engine and found it came from the Gear Position Sensor (Engine/ Shifting Mechanism #25, #26 per the microfiche '06 ADV) by the Red Arrow.

Hopefully the Formagasket used will do the job.

I had the exact same leak. Don't mess with Formagasket. There is no gasket between the sensor and the case, only an O-ring. You can pull the cover and very little oil will leak out. The local dealer didn't have the proper O-ring in stock so I picked one up at Ace Hardware. Seems to me the proper one is 27.5mm x 2.5mm and the one I used was 27mm x 2.5mm. So far, no leaks .

What is it about these bikes that makes it so hard for the oil to stay in the engine, where it belongs? If you looked at my garage floor, you'd think I owned a Harley. And I hear that even they don't leak oil anymore.

Just came back from ACE Hardware an could not find the correct size... yet. Will have to go to another store to see if they have more available.

So far the Formagasket is holding up and the leak has stopped.

It must be the heat from the aluminum engine to the Plastic Swithch/O-Ring changing shape ever so slightly because it was never tampered with.

I have been doing this insane 103 miles each way commute lately , I cruise 95 mph at about 4:30 am with motorcycle cops on their way to work passing me while splitting lanes at 85 mph into Los angeles


a really bad oil leak popped up this morning so I remembered this thread and dug it up.
there was a big puddle under it at the gas station
My leakage looed just like the pictures here
I took off the carbs and the sensor was finger tite
took off the skidplatee and couldnt find anything
cleaned and tightened it back up hope it cures it

guess I'll find out when i test it and report back

rode all week with the leak 1050 miles of splitting lanes and 95 mph cruising
used up a half a stick of oil leaked out huge puddle when I stop after going high speed freeway . it seems high speed related .
so far it started right after I found a leaky line at the suction side exiting the oil tank, the factory crimp on clamp was loose so I replaced it and it cured the cam chain random rattle
then this popped up
I thought it was the neutral light switch and siliconed that all up but no dice, then the oil pressure sender (unless the sender itself is leaking

i need to strip the tanks and skidplate off and try again, damn this leak is hard to find ! seems like it happens after cruising over 90mph if Im not mistaken

i took off the tanks and see the oil sender leak is gone now bone dry but the highest point of wetness is at the base gasket on the left rear cyl

I swear mine looks just like dee-gees but the base gasket on the cyl looks wetter , so why take pics

this is strange
can tbelieve that much oil could come out of the cylinder base gasket
nothing all
where the hell is all that oil coming from that leaks onto the ground when I come down from high speed ?
I can run down to the store and not a drop

it's not the valve covers
not the heads
not the main cases
not the oil pressure sender
not the neutral light switch
not the oil tank breathers
not the check ball screen on the oil tank or the suction tube
and not the crankcase breather either
not the drain plug
not the oil screen
not the oil filter cover

can the alternator cover or the base gasket on the left rear leak that much ?
i mean a puddle about 3" (75mm) DIA

Two this spring to ind, have you checked the starter motor O ring seal?

If not check Pyndons thread as he had a similar problem, see attached.

Hopefully you got it sorted by now, I JUST fixed this leak on mine a few days ago. I "laid 'er down" (like the Harley guys ) 'cause I recently did an oil change and didn't want to lose $30 worth of synthetic.



I took the o-ring to several auto-parts stores with no luck, their o-rings were way to thick. I went to the mega Jap bike dealer and found one in their o-ring bin that was a little smaller in diameter and slightly thicker than the stock. It stretched on fine and sealed the hole even solidly with no wiggle room. Sorry, I don't know the actual size, me and the parts guy kinda eyeballed it, but I should've confirmed... Just came in from a 600 mile "test" () and not a drop leaking!

it could be it
mystery leak from invisible area between the V
could explin why it leaks at high RPM (crankcase pressure) and not oil pressure

Its snowing now so the 90mph test will have to wait

just hope its not the base gasket its got at least 27,000 on the odometer but i traded it used for a 576 RFS build in '07 from a sort of flaky guy so who knows if the speedo was changed out , it originated from montana

Hopefully base gaskets are not the answer for me, either. Winter is coming, but I'm still not excited about a teardown to that level. Only 20,000 miles for me, so I'll hope the odds favor something simpler.

Anybody who's pulled the starter motor cover have some pix?
