xr650r-install new sleeve or get the bore rechromed

just bought a plated xr650r ,its pretty farkled out .but the top end sounds loose -it noiser than my old xr600.on the 600 i put a new famous name forged piston in after a 3rd gear repair.i didnt measure any thing but it seems like the forged piston fit looser than the oem piston and engine is idea for the 650-send the cylinder and a new honda oem piston to us chrome and get the engine restored to as new honda specs.might be a little more expensive this way but i want it at oem specs and i can break it in on the street in town.i basically want a tight uncorked 650r.also does anybody know about xr650r ability to run on pemex in mexico?my old xr600r doesnt like it.

My XR650R has 1800 miles on it and is noisy as heck. I think you'll find that most XRR's are real noisy bikes. Mine has a rattle/knock sound to it, you can hear it when it idles and when you are moving, just a slight throttle increase over cruise and you can hear it also especially when standing up. The metal skid plate and large tank amplify the effect.

Every XRR that i've ridden makes these noises, some louder than others. Mine is one of the louder ones. It doesn't use any oil though and runs great.

U.S. Chrome could probably replate your cylinder (with original Nikasil, not chrome plating). An iron cylinder liner would be a nasty step backwards. Have you checked compression? Are you burning oil? Wouldn't you feel a little silly if you spent the time and money and effort and it sounded the same when you put it back together?

That rocks-in-a-blender sound is pretty normal. I don't know how many hours are on your motor but I would look for a few more indicators besides sound before concluding the top end needs to be re-done.

when i take the valve cover off (to check valve clearence) i will have to get a good leak down gauge and check cylinder leak down.i am just not familiar with this particular engine.i think i will go to 15 tooth on front to slow the engine down on the highway.
