1944 UL Restoration

Well, it has taken 10 years to find my soulmate, and she was almost in my backyard ! Once I found her, it took 3 years of romance to convince her to come with me.

She won't let me ride her yet, but promised that one day, if I kicked her just right....

I could ride her !

1944 UL (74ci flathead) Harley Davidson

According to my research so far, which may not be 100% correct, due to WWII military needs, very few civilian bikes were made 1942-1945.

I don't plan on an AMCA type "perfect restoration", but a nicely done, correct rider.

I'll post more later, got to get ready for work !

Original sheetmetal, which was, according to the owner, bobbed in the 50's ! A big plus !

The guy I bought it from has 18 bikes, most of them semi-buried, and this one is in the back of the basement. So while he is clearing the way to get it out, I am clearing space for it.

I plan NO change in color ! The bobbed original sheetmetal is going back on. I might BRUSH on a fresh coat of the ugly red.

The nasty blue sheetmetal is reproduction, so I may paint it gray, the only color available in 1944.

Period "knobbys" are still being produced by a couple of manufacturers, and it will have a set. When I finish it, the plan is to ride the Trans-American Trail (TAT) from Jellico to the Ozarks !

Just look at this 50's era welding ! I can visualize some young guy with a torch, and clothes hanger as a welding rod, making his bike the coolest in the neighborhood. That's what it's all about !
