XR650R Subframe

Wondering if any local owners of the mighty XR650R have had trouble with the rear subframe? I have heard that these are quite prone to breakage (in fact there is a whole thread on adv devoted to this issue) - so I bought this (on right):

However, it is significant shorter than the one it replaces (on left) - seems to me that not only would the mudguard flap about more, but I have no place to hang my numberplate!

It occurs to me on inspection that perhaps the aussie spec subframe is not the same as the yankee counterpart, and thus, doesn't suffer the same weakness? Anybody have a horror story to share?

Ive heard the 650L is weaker because its tubular and that looks tubular to me. Youv'e got a 650 R ?? and not a 650 L ??
Just sayin

Just my 2 cents as i don't have one but researched it for a mate with a 650R and the Aussie version has the mudguard support that the Yank one does not but the support you have purchased is to brace the Alloy part of the rear subframe as i think they break off down near the main frame lugs i think? not sure how it adapts with the Aussie Guard support! Also the Foot peg snapping off is a concern i think RHS and there is a cople of different fixes for that as well, makes me feel unwell just the thought of landing off a jump and the peg parting ways driving my leg into the ground and all the pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers Rick

only reason the frame will break is if you intend putting on a rack and loading it up. so if you dont intend to carry anything back there, i wouldnt waste the time changing it.

Now that's what I'm talkin about! Lovely to see a girl dressed for the ball - albeit I note from the airhead that yours is an L? I suppose it's possible that the subframe is different?? I did see your RR and wonder at the time

I am putting a rack on it, the rack sits on the cross brace part of the support. I'm just not sure how much of a load is a load?? The heaviest stuff I will reserve for the panniers, and so carry the weight on the back of the seat.

However weight is inevitable when you are talking about deserts eg water.

Sub frame is definitely different as the R is an Alloy frame and the L steel. My mate on our Cape trip had no problem with his sub frame but maybe that was because he put his gear in the back of a Landcuiser , It all depends on how much you want to load it up? we came across a BMW HP2 in Sesia that had broken its ass off due to not wanting to carry a load and the rider was hunting around to try and find someone to weld it all back on for him.

Cheers Rick

Just wanting to know, is the R alloy frame solid or tubular? I can't find info on this.

Definitely. The PO overtightened a couple of bolts in the subframe (holding on the plastic ) which caused the collar inside the frame to turn instead of the bolt loosening. No way you'd see that setup with a solid frame. Bit of an annoying design flaw IMO.

Yep mate its an L, which is why i want to learn about yours. In that pic she's carrying a white bum tank - 7ltrs, a 5ltr gerry, a 3m tarp, a dry towel and pants, then the swag with -10 bag rolled with. The saddle bags are chockers thou mostly carried over the saddle.
Main thing is the racks which I bought off Locky (xr 600), were modified wider to suit 650 L and bolt to the top bolt on the pillion footpeg.
So I hope that helps you.

Weak spot on the R frame is on the rails that meet the frame.
Being alloy it will crack instead of bend.

If you want to carry a heavy load you need a rack that bypasses the subframe to the footpeg & main frame rail, much like how John C done with his custom rack.
I purchased one from Germany but it was a fair amount of coin.
