I stayed within a close distance of the Beemer but the rider was giving it hell and I truly had to work and focus on the road in order to stay up.

I could tell that the BMW rider was probably a young man since he appeared quite small and was wearing a set of black full-race leathers and a full-face helmet. We dodged about, curve after curve, and came upon one or two cars that we jumped in quick order. This dance continued for about 20 minutes and I never got into a position to pass my spirited leader. Suddenly, the small tail light of the BMW ignited and the bike slowed in order to turn off onto a beach-side overlook with a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean extending below those clear October skies.

I pulled off the road right behind the BMW to congratulate the rider on his riding skills with the old bike. By the time I rolled to a stop, the Beemer rider was dismounted and standing in front of me. I looked up and the rider pulled off the Arai full-face helmet to release a cascade of beautiful blonde hair that fell upon the shoulders of the black Bates suit.

I pulled off my helmet and my mouth fell open at the sight. I looked at her in surprise and all I could think to utter was "You're a girl!" She replied, "I'm glad you noticed!" and smiled broadly to show a set of perfectly-straight, pearly-white teeth. I remained on my bike and watched her remove her gloves and set everything on the tank of the old BMW.

She was a perfect specimen of a fetching, young woman. Along with the long naturally-blonde hair and perfect smile, she had sparkling blue eyes and a wonderful personality. I would guess her to be in her mid twenties and she looked like a spitting image of Heather Locklear (?) who was a popular Hollywood actress of the day. I just couldn't believe it.

Her leathers were so tight they looked as if they had been painted on her. She was VERY well-proportioned and just the most striking image of a female motorcyclist that I have ever seen - before or since. She trumped anything I've ever seen on the "bike girl" pictures posted about the internet. That's for sure.

We talked for a few minutes and she initiated her introduction by telling me her name and extending her little hand for a handshake. I took the clean little hand in mine and noticed her perfectly manicured nails, not long but very clean and perfectly shaped. Her hand was warm and soft and I only reluctantly returned it to her as I gave her my name in return.

We chatted a bit. She looked at my bike and I looked at hers. All the time I could sense my heart pounding in my chest. Darn !

I said, "How in the world did you learn to ride like that !?" She smiled broadly and told me that she lived locally and that her "Daddy" restored old BMW's and that she had been riding since she was about 6.

I told her I was touring through New England and she seemed interested in where I had been and where I was going. She started asking me if I had ridden this road and that road and I told her, no, I had just arrived in the area.

She twisted up her nice little lips and looked sideways to the sea. "Well, I am supposed to be somewhere in a few minutes but, if I get through in time, I may can meet you and show you around a little bit." Thank you, Great Providence, I thought. My luck was good today !

She told me to go on into Gloucester and wait for her at the seaside park where the fisherman statue presides. I dutifully took those instructions and gave her a tight little squeeze. She did caution me that she may not be able to make it but she would try. My wits were so bumbled that I didn't think to get a phone number or any follow-up information.

We parted company and I remember watching her small black form disappear down the road. The old BMW sounded its signature boxer harmony as she faded from sight around a distant sweeping curve.

I made my way to Gloucester and spent the better part of the afternoon looking at the mariner statue there. Heather never showed and I never saw her again but she remains vivid in my memory after all these years.

You forgot to preface it with "you probably won't believe this, but this really happened".

Also, the ending should have caused some heavy breathing.

We took part in the annual Dirty Face Dual Sport in Wenatchee, WA last weekend and as the photo proves her face got dirty







Then today we went out for her first real singletrack ride today and she had a blast and rode really well.
