i dont understand. what can a photo of a tag be used for in a devious manner?? can it be used somehow for a identity theft scam somehow? can someone use it to frame someone somehow? can they somehow get my address from it and come to my house and see if they can steal my bike out of the garage or rob my house?

Sallydog,
I share your skepticism. At the end of the day, my tag is on the bike in public view every day. My name is in the phonebook. Someone wants my tag let them have it - same with my phone number and address (which is also in the phonebook). I know there are folks a lot more paranoid than I but I really don't see the point.

As an information security guy, i can tell you that posting a photo of your tag is significantly safer than registering for one of those discount cards at Walgreens. The databases that use your tag typically only track name, address, vehicle info, taxes, and some link an owner to a warrant database.

Customer cards track name, address, credit card info, and shopping habits such as time of day you shop and everything you buy. The credit cards are bad enough, but you wouuld be amazed at what a person can learn from the rest of the shopping info. People are willing to give up a lot of personal info for a small discount.

Sent from the voices in my head and transcribed by their drinking buddy.
