800GS shock bolt design flaw?

The shaft needs to be machined oversize, then hardened to 60 HRC, and ground to the correct tolerance for taking the task of the needle roller bearing inner race, please keep that in mind. I do not believe Cr plated material will hold the roller pressure for too long. The shaft as shown above is for production of pneumatic pistons.

My understanding is that the 2013 and 14"s don't have this problem. Is that right? If so then what did BMW change in their design?

Well, BestRest are selling a 12.9 bolt to replace the OEM 10.5 for 2008 - 2013 models, so they are still seeing it as an issue. Their support bracket won't fit the '13 bike though.

The fact it doesn't fit implies a change... Would be interested to see photos if anyone has a 2013/14 F8GS.

Should never have happened in the first place. Really poor design IMHO.

still some interested in statistics?
well not much bent but noticeable, especially when unscrewing it.
67,000 km, not so aggressive riding, both on and of-road, quite a few potholes and speed bumps...

Checked the infamous bolt while I was installing the Hyper Pro rear spring and it was unbent. Thought I should report either way. Was expecting a slightly bent bolt because I am a light weight ( 63 kg / 139 lbs) rider but I ride aggressive and mostly off road. Even the paved roads here are harsh on the bike so I'm very happy that it wasn't bent. I decided not to do anything about the upper bolt and just check it regularly.

On a side note, I made the bike as light as possible with shorai lightweight battery, arrow manifolds and mivv suono titanium exhaust (only 1.2 kgs). Also I don't carry stuff on the bike because it ruins all the fun for me.

Edit: 2008 F800GS

I have a '13 and the issue is the same...slightly bent bolt on mine after 800 miles of me riding hard, but with the knowledge that there is a design flaw.

ordered the ohlins kit to prevent frame bending and it doesn't fit bc there's some plastic in the way...waiting to see if they will redesign it to fit, but doubt it will happen.

next option is to cut out the excess plastic...don't really wanna do that on a new bike though

wow, I've been thrashing mine, but have had a new shock in from the start.

Guess I'll go grab a beer, pull mine apart and report back on what I find.

welp, that was about a swallow of beer. Straight as an arrow, forgot I put the Indy Kit in.

The plastic bit on the 13's is the plastic cover for the Charcoal Cannister and ABS pump, it's all one big unit.

Since I have a lot of beer left over, i'll be pulling the charcoal cannister. This should be interesting, no room to pull it through the frame...

Yes I'm really disappointed about the ending of "Desolation of Smaug"... Last time I pay 8€ to see a 2h45 film in the cinema that I haven't downloaded before.

I was referring to the n00b with 2 posts. Thought you might want his particulars for the gift basket from the welcoming committee.

But hey, I guess I need to spell it out.
