I know one of these personal trainers. He has this little evil grin while asking for more. This changes to a wide satisfied evil grin if you can't do it.

Don't want it bigger, but do want it stronger. Dunno if you saw Elizabeth Kreutz's amazing images of Lance's comeback and the core work he was doing in the off-season, but I wanna be like Lance.
When I walked in, the trainer asked, "swimmer are ya?" I asked how he knew and he outlined the muscles he could tell were strong and the ones way out of balance and talked to me about the shoulder injury I had last year... I wanna get 'em balanced and strengthened.

So what's the plan?
Running and bicyling = big strong legs and puny upper body Swimming = big lats, triceps and deltoids and possibly pecs and biceps (if you do weights) and reasonable core muscles. Legs - not nearly as much. I'm guessing that triathletes overemphasize the running piece and underemphasize the swimming (triathletes aren't usually nearly as strong at swimming as they are at running and bicyling.) Love to hear what you are going to do.

I've done the personal trainer thing. He actually had me on the edge of passing out once because I just ran dry. A bit of Gatorade and I was ok, but the world was *very* grey for a while.
Been a while and I'm sure he's just frothing at the mouth to get his hands on me again. He could take me in any contest of physical strength. But I emptied his wallet on the golf course. Rancho

I've cycled at least three times a week and worked out (after a lifecycle warm up) with mostly light weights for the last 25 years. Working out with weights spikes your blood pressure. Make sure you do at least 25 minutes of cardio before you start any weight training. Spiked blood pressure instantly expands the veins, it puts small tears in veins, calcium builds up along these tears (i think it's calcium that builds up), the calcium falls off causing strokes. Moral of story is do some cardio BEFORE you work out to "warm up your veins" and get less tears. This was explained to me by a cardiologist (one of the smartest men I've ever known) he is about 97 these days.

And I've never heard this theory before. Arteries have thick muscular walls and don't tend to stretch very much regardless of what the BP does. Damage in the walls of the arteries is usually due to mechanical effects associated with turbulent blood flow at sites of direction change and branching. Lipid deposits in the walls (from elevated cholesterol) contribute and set up spots susceptible to further mechanical damage. The main risk from a BP spike is that the heart has to work harder and if you have any coronary artery disease that can increase your risk of having a heart attack. If you happen to have an aneurysm or vascular malformation in your head, it has a higher risk of rupturing if your BP spikes. Same thing if you have disease of the small vessels in your brain. Chronic high blood pressure leads to premature damage of the artierial walls, but I haven't heard about transient acute BP spikes as a major factor in the development of arteriosclerosis. BTW, your recommendation to do cardio before pushing weights is a good one. It makes sense for lots of reasons. Including helping to keep the BP from spiking.
