Fuel availability report please...

Wednesday, 11/7, I'll be traveling from CT to VA toting my mother in law. My usual route is as follows:

84W
684S
287N
Over Tappan Zee Bridge
Garden State Parkway S
NJ TPKE S to end
Cross bridge into Deleware
95S
Etc.

MyQ's:
Is there gas along the Parkway and Turnpike?

It's a MA plated car with the last digit being 2. I understand that on this, an odd day, there are some stations where I will not be allowed to buy gas. At what point southbound will I no longer have this impediment?

Where gas exists and I can legally buy it, are there long lines? Drama?

I expect there will be many wiz breaks...she's 83. Are the rest areas functioning?

Mapquest says going way around to the west and joining 81S will cost me an extra 1.3 hours. Is it worth doing that?

Your local knowledge and snide comments are appreciated.

Your suggestions on laisons with mom inlaw will be rewarded with a picture of her. You really don't want that!

you have gas in both major roads, but you will have to seat on line

The fuel rationing is in for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties.

The farther south you go the better. The farther away from the ocean coast the better.

The Parkway and Turnpike seems to be getting gas pretty regularly and the state police are raking in the overtime manning the stations. But there may be mile long waiting lines, so if you need gas dont wait till you are really low.

Make sure you are in the right county because I know here in Morris and Passaic County people are getting into fist fights and tattling on people with off plates or line cutting Job security for me but really annoying.

When I went down to check the in-laws house in Toms River the rest areas were about 50/50 on teh Parkway. My 65 year old mother in law just popped a squat in the woods. But she is a rough Eastern European transplant.

I believe that odd-even is not in effect below exit 7 on the NJTP. North of there you need to follow the odd-even rule regardless of state plate.

Generally not anymore

Yes

I don't think so

Where there have been long gas lines, have they clogged the through traffic lanes?

Not to bad on the highways but its really screwing the in city gas stations. The highways are just lining up on the shoulders.

Thanks for the intel folks! I'll top it off in Danbury and hope to leave the gas in NJ for the locals.

Try to get gas before you get into northern NJ. Southern NJ, you should have no issues. These are the 12 counties doing the fuel rationing:

Trenton, NJ Tonight, Governor Chris Christie took action to prevent a fuel shortage and ease the problem of extended wait times and lines at gas stations by signing Executive Order 108, declaring a limited state of energy emergency with regard to the supply of motor fuel and implementing odd-even rationing for gasoline purchases in 12 New Jersey counties. Odd-even fuel sales will take effect in the following counties at noon on November 3, 2012: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren.

So I know you're all sitting on the edge of your seats waiting to hear how my trip went...

I got gas in Danbury. The GSP was pretty empty with zero traffic issues. There were electronic signs indicating the odd/even system. The NJTPK had normal traffic. The car I drove was a hybrid that made it to VA before it needed more gas.

Had I not seen the hurricane pics on TV and odd/even signs, I wouldn't know anything was amiss.

Thanks again for the info and I hope your state recovers soon.

Maybe this will help!

He even followed us and got his tires dirty ! ! !

Thanks for joining us Doc.
It was good to see you again.

Just a shame you had to leave early.

I hope you all are making out OK.

I will probably be going to Point Pleasant, NJ tomorrow to help out.
