Vario has negative points too:

Really heavy
Relatively small carrying capacity because of the internal expansion hardware
Fairly fragile
Expensive

We have a full set of Vario luggage which came with a used bike we bought and like it, but would never have paid the original full price for the set.

I'm sure... as all cases/parts have pros & cons. But I have had a good experience so far. I can fit my full face helmet when expanded and don't have to carry it around when I get to the office.

I'm sure there might be cheaper options out there. I never saw one I liked or that matched the bike. My take was after spending $24K on a bike I'd be OK with pitching an extra $1000 for Top Case (including carrier, backrest padding and lock set to match ignition key) and handguards.

I had this on my KLR, nice bag and it fit like it was made for the bike. Probably would be using it now but the bag is red and the bike is blue. It is eBay bound.

I can use the Cortech 18 liters to hold the bare minumins for 3 day two night trip. 3 pair underware, 2 t's, 1 sweat shirt, pair of shorts, etc.
I leave the house wearing the jeans that I'l be wearing for 3 days in a row... But everybody wears the same jeans for three days in a row....

As long as you have enough weight in the steamer trunk it you shouldnt have to worry too much about the side winds.

I have never had Saddle bags before. any words of advice?

I use the Givi Traffic II - not big and bulky but it has a a very usable 35 L of storage that locks to keep the contents secure. Does not effect handling and I feel looks good on the bike. :
