I thought a Vario top case would be perfect since I could key it to the bike and it would be simple to remove when I didn't want it. Problem was everything said it couldn't be done because the Vario rack would not work with the Jesse rack. I decided to try it anyways and bought a Vario with rack from an inmate on here.

Got it and tried to mate it up and saw what the problem was, there are two "legs" on the Vario rack that would go into holes on the stock rear rack. However, the Jesse rack is solid. I looked more closely at the Vario rack and realized that the "legs" were actually tubes which were tack welded onto the rack. I simply used an angle grinder to cut the tack welds and the "legs" twisted right out. I then got a little spacer from the dealer to make the rack level and it's now perfect. I have a Vario case with Jesse bags.

If anyone cares, I'll take pictures. If no one cares, I won't.

Would appreciate if you could picture your setup. Particularly what you did to space it on the top.

Installed the top case yesterday. For $65.00 not a bad deal at all.

(First post, to boot!)

My F800GS came with a Touratech mounting plate on the back, but I have zero desire to pay Touratech prices. I've been Googling and I think I know my answer, but just to confirm: Nobody makes a knock-off or generic top case that uses the Touratech mount system, right?

(After selling the Touratech deck plate I could probably be halfway to a nice new soft tail bag!)

Probably not for hardcore off road use , but i can take the whole thing away in under 2 Min's (secs for top only without plate) and just use the Touratech rack alone. K53 weighs 5Kg , TT rack has limit 10 kg , so it leaves 5 Kg loading limit. For commuting porpoise i need more space to store things when i stop , not while riding (like helmet , jacket), so this is perfect for me.

As you can see , the K53 does not have any red color on it.
Here is a photo without the case , just the E250 plate.

The touratech rack is compatible with the BMW side panniers , and ofc with the touratech ones. Probably with any side panniers , but not sure.
Hi there!

I want to order the TT pannier racks, but i have a serious dilemma: is the BMW OEM Vario topcase(and OEM plate) compatibile with the racks? I have the topcase and i am afraid ill have to sell it in order to install the sidecases.
Thanks
Mihai

Hey opas,

Nice bike. Question: judging by the TT saddle, you are about 5.9. Is the TT lip any good? I have a Puig screen, but i like the OEM better as far as quality. I want to order the lip also. Does the metal bracket block the view?
Thanks,
Mihai

Even with my Jesse Odyssey case, my dry bag, my H2W bag, and my BMW soft topcase, I agree with Alex. The Vario still makes the most sense to me insofar as mount and key and expansion when desired. It has shown no fragility when smashed. It does seem heavy, but when expanded the weight is in line with its volume. No added weight of aftermarket mounts, racks or plates.

But inmates love to improve on BMW's designs. Or at least try to!

Also, the Vario mounting plate has two very useful tiedown points on the front, accessible even with the top case in place. We found two of our Giant Loop bag straps worked perfectly in those mounts. They look like they were put there just for this reason.

Here's how it looks:

Actually, now that I really look at the top case mount, I see it has many different spots to tie things onto, especially if you don't have the top box on. Must remember that when we're packing for the next trip.

Also, this story below applies to the Vario side boxes, but it does show the quality of the Varios in general...

It sure is solid, and even if it suffers a hit, it may not be broken beyond use...

My story: went to Vermont last weekend for the CroMag Rally, drove a lot of the way in the rain, got tired, forgot the Vario side bags were on my bike and while scouting out camp sites, I drove too close to a very heavy duty camp grill. This thing was tipped out of the firepit area, with a couple of really substantial handles, one of which hit my right side box fairly hard.

I stopped and checked the damage and the box had tipped backward, swivelling on the upper mount which held and was undamaged but the turn signal was broken. The box was locked in the tipped angle, and I couldn't remove it from the bike until I remembered that the bottom mount is bolted on. I removed it and the bag came right off.

I bolted that mount back into place, taped the turn signal mount together with electrical tape, and it all worked perfectly from then on.

The only real damage was the turn signal stalk which will be plastic epoxied back together, and there's a bit of the plastic from the lower mount broken off, but that part seems to make no difference, though I may replace or repair it too.

In the past I always thought this luggage was overpriced, heavy and delicate. Well I can take 'delicate' off that list.

BTW, the Varios were almost free for us since they were included with the low mileage trade-in Stephanie bought, so we never really had to pay for them in the first place...

although not an F800,, just a lowly little F650GS i mounted a Givi V46 as my top box with a SW-Motech rack along with Jesse side boxes. i had to make a couple of spacers for the Jesse's so they would open without hitting the top box.

Hi and thanks for the comment. I believe that TT lip makes a difference for a reasonable price. Its lifting wind just over the helmet in the normal speed . And I think it looks pretty. It does not come in the way of my view and it is easy to remove. I also have winglets from Nippy Normans as I think does a good job. Now I have a Mirage2 on the way from Canada and I am excited about how the fairing will be compared to TT lip, and the original screen.
