Micks 1st Adventure Ride
Two weeks ago I bought this, my first Adventure Bike, a KLR650 2007 Model. The bike came fully setup. Motech Crash Bars, Motech Pannier Bars, Trax Top Box, Wolfman Tank Bag, Garmin Zumo 550, Startrack 1 Comms, Andy Strapz Panniers + more. Basically add fuel and head off.
![]() For my first trip I followed the suggestion of a work Colleague. Head from home to Kilcoy –onto Thursday loaded up the bike with camping gear, I looked at the load and first thought was it looks like I am going away for a month. On reflection I guess there is not much difference between an overnighter and a month. Friday morning wheeled it outside for a 10AM departure. LMAO I could not get on it, no matter how hard I tried my MX Boots did not give me the flexibility and also the way the load was positioned. Anyway hit the road 40 mins later after ditching the MX boots and relocating some of the load to a less than ideal spot. First Stop to check everything was still secured the ![]() ![]() Met this Guy from the Forum sorry forgot your name. We had a good chat about bikes n things. ![]() On the Road, Splityard Creek Road Paused for a Photo Opportunity near the Mt Glorious Turn off. One of Queenslands famous biker roads. ![]() ![]() Bike was going well I was starting to feel comfortable with it, stopped for a drink, snack and a photo at The Spit at Somerset Dam. On a weekend one can barely move here due to the number of powerboats cruising around on the dam. But being a Friday it was peaceful and serene. ![]() ![]() Coming down from the hills Near ![]() Stopped here to fill up with fuel and lunch. ![]() Took the ![]() Just puttered along slowly dodging cows enjoying the scenery ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then came across this my first creek crossing paused briefly looked at the crystal clear water,, ahh does not look deep just go for it. Was a bit deeper than expected. Lesson 1 depth of water can be deceptive. Joe did not tell me there was creek crossings on this road ![]() The Next Creek Crossing I neglected to take a picture because was just happy got over it without dropping the bike. It had a concrete base that was slippery as hell. Anyway Progressing,,, starting to feel a bit fluey ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Stopped at Old Jimna Firetower for a break after that awesome bit of road (thanks Joe),, made a decision sadly to head home as could feel the onset of a cold rather than spend a night out in the cold. ![]() ![]() Nice Farmland near Kilcoy on the way back home.. ![]() Anyway despite the Flu I had a great day, some valuable things learned. Have to rethink how I load the bike. Might ditch the aluminium Trax box in favor of some soft bags. Need to get some more flexible boots and a different helmet.. Anyway here are some pics of my other bikes. Needless to say I am hooked on Adventure bike riding. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thats great Mick, The KLR looks the goods - you may want to have the thread shifted over to ride reports.

there are a few of us meeting up at the carpark, of the northside of plenty road and ring road intersection, this saturday, the 1st, at 7.30am, then we're heading over to Mansfield to catch up with the Riverina Riders, and from there going on a bit of a tour via Jamieson, Woods Point just to name a few of the places we'll be going via, and then finally ending up at Marysville, for a bbq tea and a few drinks. Most of us have booked a room at the tower motel, it is booked out for the adv riders group, so not sure if ther are any rooms left but some of us might have spare beds as some of the rooms are multiple rooms.

Welcome
welcome Mick, thanks for posting story.
Wise move to go on fully loaded short ride. Hope the plans go well for the next one. Nice to see the KLR added to your stable of bikes. I think there may be a thread dedicated to klr in both the aussie and international sections of the ADV forum (if you didn't know that already) Ian
