Day 7

More coastline!

The day got underway with us riding south on the 101. I had no idea of the roads in the area, but wanted to take the first available road back to the coast and Highway 1. By chance, that happened to be the California 84. Holy Crap! What a beautifully twisty road. I'm started to wish I lived in California. You can jump on just about any road and be in twisty heaven.

I liked the fog and cool temps, but Hel wanted sunshine and heat. She'll soon get her wish. The Highway 1 South of San Francisco is far less twisty and making decent time wasn't a problem.

Cool2 Santa Barbara

Thanks DP!

Wardrobe Changes. First we leave the coast and warm up so we stop to take liners off. At the next gas stop we are nearing the coast again so the liners go back on. (I tried to tell her we were heading inland.)

20 minutes later it's 100 degrees again, and she can't get undressed fast enough.

We spot Santa Barbara below. Will we be able to roll into town on a Friday night and find a room?

This is the most money we ever spent on a Motel 6. On the other hand the room was 1 block from the beach and a near downtown. Small, but well kept and nicely furnished. ($166)

After cleaning up and calling the kids we take a long walk on the beach and pier.

To watch the sunset over the mainland.

We found a nice seafood restaurant a few blocks from the beach near the railroad tracks. I think it was named the Bay Club Restaurant and Fish Market. The food was great and a classical guitarist set the mood. We approve! Stuffed, we waddle back to the room. Santa Barbara was the setting of our most romantic night on this trip.
To see how the sun can go down over the mainland on the west coast go to Google Maps and zoom to Santa Barbara. The sunset photos were shot from the pier.

Shaggie, Your links sure make New Zealand inviting. I'll certainly contact you if I'm lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit. I need more time and money.

Day 8

Santa Barbara-Angeles Crest-San Jacintos-Indio

We get a nice cool start to the day...

...But quickly are in 100+ degrees and LA traffic. WTF?! Bumper to bumper traffic on SATURDAY!

Hel gives me another salute when we head into the hills to ride the Angeles Crest. Nice road! LA riders are lucky to have such curves so close to home. It was over 100 degrees even on the top though. Not many pictures today. After all we've seen on this trip it seemed pointless today...

A rider was being loaded in the ambulance. Too much fun.

We ride the Palms to Pines Scenic Highway. I've now ridden it three times. It's worth another visit.

Around the San Jacinto Mountains we go...

Then down Seven Level Hill into the furnace hell that is Indio.

We grab a motel and call it a day. Only the long HOT ride home left to do. We get a big dust storm and a few drops of rain overnight(just enough to dirty up the Aprilia). It's the first precipitation we've had to deal with on this trip. I guess there are benefits to riding the HEAT WAVE.
