Eh? Alternative to Touratech's zega pannier special system F800GS

Have recently got a 2008 800GS and wanted to replace the BMW panniers as I don't like side loaders so started looking around and settled on the zega's

I liked the idea of the special system but I did not like the way they were selling it and the price, the special system is one 41l and another one thatís been modified or I should say reduced to 34l this is not overly apparent from the website. my answer to this was to order the standard 29l and 35l system and ask Touratech to replace the 29l with a 41l and then simply mount them on the opposite side

When I rang them up they said they could not sell me this because they sold the special system and would I like that, I then promptly pointed out the £400 difference

standard system -- 29l left 35l right ---- 64 liters + 0litres ---- £ 761.27 + £ 0.00
my setup -------------35l left 41l right ---- 76 liters +12litres ---- £ 805.71 + £ 44.44
special system -----34l left 41l right ---- 75 liters +11litres ---- £ 1,154.69 + £ 393.42

I ordered all the parts separately and it cost £ 44.44 more even though the panniers cost the same no matter what size you get

I know what youíre about to say how wide are these then

standard system -----1018mm + 0mm
my setup ----------------1098mm + 80mm
special system --------1049mm + 31mm

my setup is only 80mm bigger than the standard and I get 12 liters more space thatís only 4cm each side and 50mm bigger than the special 2.5cm each side

Don't settle for the norm ask for what you want, just thought Iíd let you know incase no one has thought of it before will put up some pics but have to wait for Touratech to send me a right hand frame as they sent me 2 left hand ones not overly impressed with them to be honest like the panniers though

Pics

Sorry have been really busy and touratech took ages finding me a right hand frame that did not rattle, still haven't but settled for the one they said rattled the least, no not kidding they have said that the F800GS racks have had problems with pieces of the weld getting inside and rattling, sounded like someone had put ball bearings in there

here's what I got

this is a 35l on the left and a 41l on the right and its 80mm wider than the standard system I know itís quite wide but I won't be filtering (lane splitting) with them on, they are not for commuting

Hope this is helpful to someone who maybe hasnít thought of it

touratech don't sell this setup because they want to sell you there special system which is 1 litre less than this £350 more than this and only 50mm smaller

£45 for an extra 12 litres of space bargin

Speaking of alternatives holan and metal mule make balanced racks, one of those with a pair of 35L zega's would be the way to go.
Ok you need a muffler but thats just an excuse to buy one.
