That's how I did it. I could fit 2 fronts in the left side and the 1 Rear in the Right. That way I could remember what side the tube was on when needed. They stayed in there fine for me. I put them in a plastic bag, wrapped them tight and w/ several layers of duct tape. Last thing you want is to find a hole that was formed from the tubes rubbing on the panels. I normally checked on them every valve check to make sure they were still holding up.

+1 ... Rear to rider's Right

Also, you may want to puff plenty of baby powder onto tubes before wrapping air-tight inside storage bags. As for securing them, just wedge in snug and tighten screws holding black panels (without pinching anything).

Might fit on one side. Be careful not to pinch any hoses.

I was told that was a no no...

Shop I go to has a mechanic that rides a 950 and he said that the heat produced through the fenders is too hot to keep tubes in there. He said the tubes will dry out fast and begin to crack where they are folded creating leaks. Just an FYI... if he is full of s**t I don't know. Just thowing it out there.

I'm not really sure how it would get that hot up in that area...

Probably more of an age issue and I'd say throw out after 2-3 years.

just guessing here ....

maybe the mech was referring to the rear fender panels ? cos the exhaust is directly under them and it gets plenty hot there.

If the tube can stay inside a tyre travelling at >160kmph, various dynamic forces acting on it all day long and still remain in good condition, i'm sure they will be safe under the front fairings.

Thumb

This thread got me wondering, so i just opened my upper fairings and examined my stored tubes.

They've been stored in there for just over 5 years (no flats), so it was time to inspect/refresh anyway (thanks).

As for the heat concern, except for sunlight radiation, those upper fairing cavities stay the coolest part of my bike.

For completeness, I decided to over-fill both tubes tonight, and they look flawless and hold pressure like new.

Of course, baby powder went everywhere (doh!), so next time perhaps i'll remember to unroll the tubes outdoors with a tail wind.

Next week i'll buy some new/fresh tubes and stash them in exactly the same manner, without worries, for the next five years.

Yes, a tube in a tyre suffers the effects of heat, friction, vibration, pressure, etc. etc. but I think the folds in a stored tyre could pose more of a problem.

I trimmed the black inside liners on my panels so no hoses have to be removed to pull the panels . Also trimmed any sharp edges on the inner and outer panel that might come in contact with the tubes and I run heavy tubes so it is all I can do to stuff the rear tube in the panel . When I mount new tires the tube comes out of the panel and into the tire and a new tube goes in the panel . So far no problums with the storage and it sure is nice to have one when you need it . SEYA

'Scuse me, please... but SCREW THAT!!

How's about we USE them, and then put new ones in the fairing panels. How in the heck can you go more than 2 - 3 years without changing tires, anyway? I use new tubes with every tire change, and keep the used tubes for spares.

OR, ...alternatively, I'll give you my address and pay shippinng if you'll send your unused tubes to me!
