Bagwell,
What is the course like? I would love to attend this ride. I ride a R1200GS with knobbies. Is the course do-able for a large adventure bike ?

You should had sent a self-stamped envelop with your payment, as described at the bottom of the registration form.

Thanks for the link.

We sent a SASE along, but haven't received anything back yet...

Looking for a bit of input on tires and tubes, though...

Our bikes came with Dunlop D605's, which seem to be not so bad on loose dirt and in sand, great on gravel, and decent in the rock gardens at Rocky Ridge. It's pretty decent on the street as well. The D605 isn't as aggro as the D606, but it's not wildly different. The knobbies aren't quite as big, though.

But, many people recommend a tire with a stiff carcass for Big Bend - and especially HD or ultra HD tubes - to help avoid flats (mostly pinches, from what I hear, hitting the rocks too hard or other general hooliganism).

I am initially inclined to leave the D605's on, install some better tubes and rim locks and just wear them out, but I thought I'd ask... We plan on taking tire tools, patch kit, inflators, a MTB pump, spare tubes, etc. Once the D605's are dead, we'd plan on upgrading to D606's or something more aggro that is still DOT legal. But, if it would be better to swap them beforehand, that would be good to know.

When we go to Big Bend, the bikes will be mildly tuned 250's (Dynojet kit, No-Toil filter, KDX snorkel (2X as big as stock), all the free mods). Prolly be a whopping 21 whp at that point. We'll ride in one of the Intermediate groups, as it's going to be our first time to Big Bend and we'd actually like to enjoy the scenery a bit - the Advanced group is a desert race from what I gathered with zero stop time and balls out the whole way, and the Turtle group, well, are mainly beginning riders and go sllllllloooooow.

Thoughts?

tires/tubes

If this is like any other DS/Offroad trips down there I recommend getting heavy duty tubes and Dunlop 606's... You will want to run about 27-30lbs of pressure given they're DOT tires...

If you plan on any highspeed riding I recommend taking that up a couple of pounds in the front.

I will be taking my KTM 990 Adv (Running a Dunlop 908 on rear) and KTM 690 Enduro R for max affect.

There isn't really much down there that is tight but there is some technical and lots of baby heads, silt beds and other nasty fun stuff... Hopefully we stay out of the park where the good riding is.. There are places on Terlingua ranch that can be absolutely narly but awesome fun...

Sorry, for some reason I dont get emails of replies.

If you are wondering if they got the regestration just call or email the email and or number on the reg form. Im sure its there, some take a lil bit longer to get the return confirmation thru the mail than others depending on how fast it got processed. Many run heavy tubes, and a tire that will take a beating pretty well out there. I run Maxxis Maxcross IT tires and although they can be done after a weekend out there they do hold up pretty well and give pretty good traction for the terrain. Do make sure your bike is in good shape, chains, tight spokes, sprockets, tires, oil, filters, etc. When you ride out there it is a lil bit remote and you want to be prepared. Build a nice tool kit just in case and bring spare plug and tube repair kit, have the tools you need for your particular bike. Most of this is all mentioned in the paperwork for the ride. Look forward to seeing you folks out there. Sorry about the late reply, but there is also additional info and contact info on the regestration paperwork. :)

I have seen it done on a large bike by some folks, but I would prefer a little smaller more agile bike than that. I have seen it done on fairly big bikes, but there are some areas that can be a little iffy on a big bike. There are some loose rocky downhills that can cause a bike to slide and I dont know if I would want a big bike sliding sideways on an off camber loose rocky downhill personally. The bigger the bike I would say the more experienced you should be maybe. :) The bigger bike would be just great on the paved sections of course.

Hope this helps.

We ended up renting a cargo van... Headed out really, really early AM on Friday.

If y'all want to try and hook up in the evenings to hang out (we're bringing plenty of Shiner and a bundle of Padilla Habanos), let's PM and exhange phone numbers.
