How reliable are these? Is it worth putting a BMW in the frame? Noticed it's not a leading link fork.
They are as reliable as anything Soviet -- and are best worked on after three bottles of vodka using a large rock. In my experience over there, Russian stuff is amazingly durable, but don't expect any level of sophistication. If you've ever owned anything classic Brit, multiply the fiddle factor several times. Russians can be as skilled as any people on earth, but their factory production has not broken records for finish. The Russians are all over "Pohd": that state when you've had a good meal, a banya (sauna here), and have slung down a half-liter of Gorrilka chased by several Baltika #9's. It's a mellow state, but you're not going to care about the finer points of machinery.

Now, with the relative weakness of the dollar versus the ruble, Russian stuff is not nearly the value it once was. That being said, the Dnepr sidecar is a tank, and worth all of the asking price. You could Barnum the tug off on the next romantic and strap it to something a little less needy - say an airhead or a GS850/1000

(Points up) What he said! For $2600, I'd take it. Currently running a Ural, I'd take a slightly different approach. Realistically, I think the current state Ural is about perfect for what it is intended. I think any less power would leave me with an around town bike only. In modern form, I can go anywhere with it though.

Check your state's title laws. Many states don't require a title for anything older than 25 years. Unfortunately, NC is not one of them, but many southern states are.

So I'd mate the hack to a BMW to create an awesome mile-eating machine, and chop the hell out of that Dnepr. Hey, how many Dnepr chops have you ever seen?

That may or may not be the vodka talking, and I do like a good old fashioned home-built chopper.

1986 R80 with a Velorex

Trailer included so you can pick it up. Sounds like a great deal.

emailed to ask year, cc and if 2wd

"Will have to dig out the paperwork to get the year. Still shows the
USSR cast into the crankcase, so I guess manufacture goes back to when
there was a USSR, which was pre-1990 or so. But this is virtually
unused. The story is that when the factory closed, they had tons of
these bikes new, never sold, and so they began exporting them on
pallets with minor assembly required. I believe it is a 650cc. One
wheel drive."

I would think twice if not 3 times before getting into this one. the craigslist post says that "unemployment forces the sale" but he takes trade for another project?

sounds to me that this project has something wrong.

Parts availability is a known issue. Check these guys here for further info: http://www.vostokmotors.com.

Importing anything from Russia takes patience and perseverance. It is a very different environment than we are accustomed to.

If you check Vostock's pages, you will note that a good, running example costs $3500 -- $5500.

Here's a good comparision item, and another good tough sidecar for a stout rig...

http://florencesc.craigslist.org/mcy/2696679199.html Running rig @ $4500

http://charlotte.craigslist.org/mcy/2671555882.html Not running no engine but with spares @ $2500

Nice rig!
I wonder what his "educated" bottom price is?

I considered flying out to California to get this last week. (I've done 2 fly and rides and 6 fly and drives before.) It was too far away and it's starting to snow here now. Shipping would have ate up the savings, so I reluctantly didn't act. Looks like someone got it and is asking $1400 more for it. Makes me wonder what t really sold for. It must be the best deal I've seen in a year.

Pictures are up now. It's a highback model 700 Velorex. Still looks like a good deal.
